📖 The Pilgrim’s Progress & Ang Manlalakbay

One of the books we have treasured in our family library is The Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan… It has been part of Sepi’s homeschool reading and has given us many opportunities to talk about Christian’s journey, the joys, struggles, choices and challenges along the way…

We also love having Ang Manlalakbay - The Pilgrim’s Progress for Filipinos alongside the original… It is meaningful to have this beloved story in our own language, making its message more accessible and giving us another way to experience and reflect on its lessons…

We are thankful to have books like these in our home, stories that are not only enjoyable to read, but also give us much to think about, learn from and share…

It has been encouraging to see how this story has become part of Sepi’s growing understanding of faith, character and the journey of following Christ…

We look forward to sharing it with Mati one day, too…

🖼️🎨 Art Appreciation & Picture Study

These What Makes a…? art appreciation book series by Richard Mühlberger, published in collaboration with The Metropolitan Museum of Art, have been helpful companions to our Picture Study Portfolios…

Through these books, Sepi is introduced to the works and lives of great artists through beautiful reproductions and short biographies… Each featured piece also tells the story behind the artwork, helping him understand its details and become more familiar with the artist and his work…

These have been part of Sepi’s art appreciation journey from his early years and continue to be enjoyed now that he is in Year 5… It’s been special to see how his familiarity with artists and their work has grown along the way…

In Charlotte Mason’s method, art appreciation is cultivated through picture study, taking time to really look at and become personally acquainted with works of art…

“We cannot measure the influence that one or another artist has upon the child’s sense of beauty, upon his power of seeing, as in a picture, the common sights of life; he is enriched more than we know in having really looked at even a single picture.” -Charlotte Mason, Home Education, p. 309

We are thankful for these resources that have accompanied our art appreciation and picture study journey through the years…

🖼️ Seeing God’s Word Through Art

One of the things we have come to love in our Charlotte Mason homeschool is bringing beautiful artwork alongside our Bible reading…

These Bible Picture Portfolios by Emily Kiser, published by Simply Charlotte Mason, have been a wonderful resource in Sepi’s Bible lessons… They contain carefully selected artwork depicting stories and events from Scripture, from Genesis, Exodus and Numbers, and Matthew, to Mark and Acts, Luke and the parables of Jesus…

As we read the Bible together, these beautiful pictures give Sepi an opportunity to pause, look closely and picture the people and events he is hearing about… They have also opened the door to simple conversations and thoughtful observations during our lessons…

These have been a treasured part of Sepi’s homeschool years, giving him beautiful things to see, think about and remember, while keeping God’s Word at the heart of our learning… We look forward to bringing them out again when Mati is ready to enjoy them too…

Above all, our prayer is that every resource we use would always point our children back to God’s Word and help them know and love the Lord…

📖🗺️ Bible Maps & Bible Atlas

This has been another meaningful resource in our homeschooling journey with Sepi…

As we study the Bible together, we have enjoyed looking beyond the words on the page and discovering the places where God’s story unfolded throughout history… These visual resources have helped us better understand the settings, journeys and locations we encounter in Scripture…

Through these maps and atlas, Sepi is able to see that the Bible is rooted in real places, real people and real events, making our lessons richer and helping God’s Word come alive in a deeper way…

We are thankful for simple resources like these that continue to nurture a love for Scripture and bring greater depth and beauty to our homeschool Bible studies…

🎼 Composer Study & Music Appreciation

These are the composer study and music appreciation resources we have enjoyed through the years, from Sepi’s Kindergarten year up to the present, now that he is in Year 5…

Our primary resource has been Opal Wheeler’s Lives of Great Musicians Series, together with the Zeezok Publishing Audio Book Collection (Set 1 MP3)… Through these living biographies, Sepi has been introduced not only to the music of each composer but also to their lives, character and the historical setting in which they lived… Listening while following along in the books has made composer study both meaningful and memorable in our home…

In the Charlotte Mason philosophy, composer study and music appreciation are not simply about learning facts or recognizing famous pieces… Rather, children become personally acquainted with one great composer at a time through regular, attentive listening… Over time, they naturally begin to recognize each composer’s unique style and develop an appreciation for beautiful music…

“Let the young people hear good music as often as possible, and that under instruction. It is a pity we like our music, as our pictures and our poetry, mixed, so that there are few opportunities of going through, as a listener, a course of the works of a single composer. But this is to be aimed at for the young people; let them study occasionally the works of a single great master until they have received some of his teaching, and know his style.” -Charlotte Mason, Formation of Character, p. 235

We are thankful for these resources that have accompanied our homeschool journey over the years and we look forward to continuing our composer study and music appreciation in the years ahead…

📖 Hiding God’s Word in Our Hearts

One of the greatest gifts we can give our children is a love for God’s Word — not only by reading it, but by hiding it in their hearts through Scripture memory…

During Sepi’s early years, some of our favorite read-alouds were Susan Hunt’s My ABC Bible Verses, My ABC Bible Verses from the Psalms, and Big Truths for Little Kids (co-authored with Richie Hunt)… These books beautifully combine Bible stories, Scripture memory and biblical teaching in a way that is engaging for young children… Through memorable illustrations, simple storytelling and gentle repetition, they helped introduce God’s truth to Sepi’s heart long before he could read on his own… Even before children intentionally memorize verses, they often begin hiding God’s Word in their hearts simply by hearing it read again and again…

As Sepi entered his elementary school years, we began using the Scripture Memory System from Simply Charlotte Mason and it has become one of the most practical resources in our homeschool… Its simple review method helps us faithfully revisit previously memorized verses while gradually adding new ones, making Scripture memory a natural part of our daily homeschool rhythm rather than a rushed activity… We pray it will continue to serve our family for many years to come…

Looking back, we are thankful for the many moments spent reading, reciting and meditating on God’s Word together… These resources have been faithful companions in helping us cultivate the habit of treasuring Scripture, but our prayer has always been that God’s Word would move beyond memory alone and take root in our children’s hearts and lives…

Now we look forward to introducing these same books and in time, the Scripture Memory System — to Mati as well… We are excited to enjoy those precious read-aloud moments again and Lord willing, watch him grow to hide God’s Word in his heart, just as Sepi has been learning to do through the years…

“I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.” -Psalm 119:11 (ESV)

🎵 Singing Our Faith

Singing hymns has become one of our family’s favorite ways to worship and hide God’s truth in our hearts…

I still remember playing the Praise Baby Collection as lullabies when Sepi was just a baby… One of the very first hymns he learned to sing was “I Sing the Mighty Power of God” when he was around three years old… Even before he could read, he was already becoming familiar with the timeless truths found in these beautiful hymns…

During his Kindergarten year in 2021, in the midst of the pandemic, one of the sweetest parts of our morning time was singing “To God Be the Glory” and “Holy, Holy, Holy” together as a family… Those hymns have become especially precious memories from that season and continue to remind us of God’s faithfulness throughout our homeschool journey…

Now, Mati has also been surrounded by hymns from the very beginning — even while he was still in my womb… It is our prayer that these songs of faith will become part of his own journey of knowing and loving the Lord…

As a Charlotte Mason homeschooling family, we have also been encouraged by her emphasis on cultivating the habit of praise… She wrote:

“The Habit of Praise.—Perhaps we do not attach enough importance to the habit of praise in our children’s devotion. Praise and thanksgiving come freely from the young heart; gladness is natural and holy, and music is a delight. The singing of hymns at home and of the hymns and canticles in church should be a special delight; and the habit of soft and reverent singing, of offering our very best in praise, should be carefully formed.” -Charlotte Mason, School Education (Vol. 3), p. 143

Among our favorite hymn resources are Singing the Great Hymns by Simply Charlotte Mason and Then Sings My Soul by Robert J. Morgan…

Singing the Great Hymns is our family’s primary hymnbook… It is thoughtfully curated for Charlotte Mason homeschool families, with hymns arranged by homeschool year, making it simple to build a consistent habit of singing together… The spiral-bound format, piano accompaniment and downloadable recordings also make it especially practical for family worship and homeschool lessons…

Then Sings My Soul has become a wonderful companion to our hymn singing… Rather than serving as a hymnbook, it shares the rich history behind each hymn — introducing the authors, the circumstances in which the hymns were written and the stories of God’s faithfulness that inspired them… Across its three volumes, it contains hundreds of hymn stories that have deepened our appreciation for the songs we sing…

Together, these resources have taught our family that hymns are more than beautiful melodies — they are rich expressions of biblical truth, theology and worship passed down through generations… Singing them has become one of the sweetest ways we learn, remember and proclaim God’s faithfulness together…

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” -Colossians 3:16

📚 Growing in God’s Word

As Sepi grew in his reading and understanding, these books became some of our favorite companions alongside the Bible…

The Beginner’s Gospel Story Bible by Jared Kennedy was one of the books we enjoyed during Sepi’s early years… With its engaging illustrations, age-appropriate storytelling and Christ-centered focus, it helped introduce foundational Bible truths in a way that young children can understand and enjoy… One of its greatest strengths is how it introduces children to the grand story of Scripture — God’s promises fulfilled in Jesus — rather than presenting Bible stories as isolated accounts… We especially appreciated that it includes stories not always found in many preschool Bible storybooks, giving children a broader introduction to God’s redemptive plan throughout Scripture…

Marty Machowski’s books — The Ology, WonderFull and The Treasure — have also been a rich blessing in our homeschool… These beautifully written books help children see how all of Scripture fits together, teaching biblical truth in a way that is both deep and accessible for grade-school learners… Through theology, the Psalms and the story of God’s redemption, they encourage children not only to know Bible facts but also to know and love the God of the Bible…

Sepi has greatly enjoyed these books through the years and continues to return to them even today... They have provided many opportunities for meaningful conversations about God’s character, His Word, His creation and His purposes throughout history...

While these books have been wonderful tools, our prayer remains the same — that they would always point beyond themselves to Christ and help cultivate a lifelong love for God’s Word…

We look forward to introducing these books to Mati in the years to come and watching him discover the same wonderful truths about God, His Word and His saving work through Christ that have been such a blessing to Sepi…

“Your word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” -Psalm 119:105

📖 The Word of God That Started It All

Before curriculum, schedules and lesson plans, there was God’s Word…

These are some of the Bibles and Bible storybooks that have shaped Sepi’s early years of learning and faith — from The Jesus Storybook Bible and The Child’s Story Bible in his preschool and kindergarten years to the English Standard Version (ESV) he began using in First Grade and continues to grow with today… We also occasionally read from the King James Version (KJV), treasured for its rich language and literary beauty…

As we look ahead, we are excited for Mati to enjoy these books as well — to learn from them, grow in God’s Word through them and make them part of his own journey of faith…

As a Charlotte Mason homeschooling family, we believe the Bible is the foundation of all true knowledge… Charlotte Mason herself wrote, “First and chiefest is the knowledge of God, to be got at most directly through the Bible.” -A Philosophy of Education, p. 254

Long before formal lessons begin, our desire is for our children to know the Lord, love His Word, see His hand in all of creation and walk faithfully with Him all their days…

“Train up a child in the way he should go; and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” -Proverbs 22:6

📚 A Shelf Full of Grace

Every book on this shelf tells a story — not only of learning, but of God’s faithfulness through the years…

These are some of the Bibles, devotionals, Bible storybooks, hymnals, Bible reference books and Christian fiction that have accompanied our family on this journey of discipleship, worship and home education…

While we appreciate good books and rich resources, we believe that true education begins with knowing God… The books on this shelf are simply tools that help point our children to Him…

As a Charlotte Mason homeschooling family, we seek to cultivate a home where faith and learning are woven together naturally through Scripture, living books, meaningful conversations, worship and the everyday rhythms of family life…

One of the first Charlotte Mason quotes I heard at a homeschool conference in 2018 that deeply resonated with me — was this:

“We allow no separation to grow up between the intellectual and ‘spiritual’ life of children, but teach them that the Divine Spirit has constant access to their spirits, and is their continual Helper in all the interests, duties and joys of life.” -A Philosophy of Education, p. ###i

This shelf represents years of collecting, reading, learning and growing — but above all, it reminds us that every good book points beyond itself to the Author of all truth, beauty and goodness…
