finally tried the sandbox smart r1, came from a gene cafe roaster. some initial thoughts:

1. sandbox can only roast 100gms per batch, after roasting, it usually gives you 84-87gms of roasted coffee. wish it can be bigger. gene cafe can roast 250gms.

2. the sandbox operates quieter than the gene cafe, you can definitely hear the 1st crack which was really nice, as i struggle with the gene cafe with this.

3. the smoke that comes out of the sandbox was much more diffused, you can smell the coffee roasting but not much smoke, so it can be operated in doors better, the gene cafe needs ducting to have the smoke go out of the window.

4. the app that comes with the sandbox is definitely a plus, hope it gets more features in the future. but the saved profiles helped me as a starting point. but the to ability customize and save your own profiles is definitely a great feature.

5. the roast that came out of the sandbox was even, need to experiment with profiles to know which you will like. i got to the like the slow roast medium with my initial batches.

trying to bring this to the philippines. hope to get that in order for others to enjoy the joys of home roasting!

A perk of being a distributor for 1zpresso is we get to sample some of their products at a very special price.

so chance to get the sandbox smart r1 roaster is too hard to pass up.

now i just bought a roughly month and 5 day old gene cafe roaster, which for me is a pretty darn good roaster specially for home roasters. we just have room to keep one and obvious choice is to keep the sandbox smart r1.

the r1 connects to an app that have cloud based saved profile from other members that you can use or share (not sure about this). so keeping records and roast profile is one of the great features. downside is you can only roast 100gms a batch which is not a deal killer for me but would have been nice if it was higher.

the gene cafe has recommendations for roasts on their manual but you can manually tweak your roast profile by playing around the time and temp as well. tons of youtube videos for reference as well as this roaster is in the market for almost 10 years already! and one big thing now is it can roast 250gms per batch. which is a good batch for the home actually.

selling this for 20k (if meet up within manila, makati or alabang area) or 21k (if delivered). so that is a 22-25% off from original price (27k) for a month old machine. roasted around 2.5kgs of beans since. bought this off lazada from a seller called lunatech, with one year repair warranty.

caveat, no more box, had to dispose it as no room in the house. but accessories are complete and definitely no issues with the unit.
