TOKUMURAYA NACHI KUROISHI VIEWING STONE
This dramatic piece is sculpted in a towering mountain landscape form, with sharply layered ridges, deep valleys, and a commanding peak that changes character from every angle. The natural stratified details and contrasting tones give it the presence of a miniature mountain range rather than an ordinary decorative stone.
The piece retains its original 「那智黒石 品質保証」 (Nachi Kuroishi Quality Guarantee) tag, with the 徳 mark associated with Tokumuraya (徳村屋) of Kumano, Japan.
Tokumuraya is a long-established, multi-generation Nachi Kuroishi workshop in Kumano that has worked with the region’s distinctive black stone for four generations, producing both traditional craft pieces and its original Bijutsu Nachiguro / Art Nachiguro works.
One of the most interesting features of this piece is its surface character. The pale cream, golden, and occasional rust-toned areas are firmly bonded mineral/surface deposits and variations rather than loose dirt. They follow the stone’s layers and crevices, creating the appearance of weathered cliffs and exposed mountain faces. Natural Nachi Kuroishi can develop surface “skin,” streaks, and other contrasting particles or deposits during its geological formation, and these are sometimes retained as part of the stone’s individual character.
This is not the kind of piece that disappears into a shelf.
Measures approximately 17 inches tall × 9 inches long × 6 inches wide, with a weight of approximately 10 kg.
