Just a humble question from an ordinary citizen.
The Philippines has basically two seasons po, summer and rainy season.
So why does flooding still seem to surprise us every single year?
Rain is not a new phenomenon.
Flood-prone areas are not a new discovery.
The same communities suffer, the same roads disappear, the same houses get flooded, the same people lose their livelihood, and sadly, sometimes their lives.
So why are we always responding to the flood instead of having a solid plan before the rain even comes?
After every disaster, we hear about donations, relief goods, emergency funds, rescue operations and rehabilitation.
But after the waters go down, what happens?
We wait for the next rainy season and somehow, we're back to the same problem.
Curious lang po, though alam ko isasagot ng lahat, Is there really no long-term solution? or have we simply become too comfortable managing the problem instead of solving it?
Yearly resilience ngani?? 😅
And honestly, what is the agenda of our politicians when the same problem has been recurring for years, or even decades na po?
Is it really impossible to have proper drainage, flood control, urban planning, waterways maintenance, and disaster preparedness that actually work?
Because if the same problem keeps happening every year, at some point, it's no longer just a natural disaster. It becomes a failure of planning and governance.
And here's the uncomfortable, slightly sarcastic question po mga ka remarkable 😁
Could it be that a recurring problem is more politically useful than a problem that has finally been solved?
I don't claim to have all the answers. I don't claim to act smart a**, I'm simply asking because ordinary Filipinos deserve more than temporary relief every time it rains po.
We shouldn't need another flood to remind us that it rains in the Philippines.
Maybe it's time we stop asking,
“How much relief can we give?”
And start asking,
“Why are we still needing relief for the same problem?”
