Remittances from overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) coursed through banks remained resilient, rising by an annual rate of 5.4 percent to US$1.6 billion in January 2012, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Governor Amando M. Tetangco, Jr. announced recently. Remittances from both sea-based and land-based workers increased, as their transfers grew by 19.8 percent (to US$369 million) and 1.6 percent (to US$1.2 billion), respectively. The BSP said that the OFWs sent home a record $20.12 billion last year, rising 7.2 percent from 2010 and exceeding the government forecast of 7 percent despite a slowing United States (US) economy and debt problems in Europe. Major sources of remittances in 2011 were the US, Canada, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, Japan, the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Italy, Germany, and Norway.

A survey conducted by the BSP showed that more and more beneficiaries of OFWs are turning to savings and investments as the central bank stepped up its advocacy on the productive use of remittances. Rosabel Guerrero, director of the BSP’s Department of Economic Statistics, said the central bank’s advocacy on the productive use of remittances from OFWs are now bearing fruit as more beneficiaries are learning to save and invest more. 09329290626 naz
