We want our customers to have the best possible value.

Florists seem to have a bad reputation for putting prices up at peak periods, everyone thinks that we ‘cash in’ and do it just to raise a quick buck. In reality there is so much extra expense involved in producing the same flower arrangements that we actually earn significantly less per rose than at any other time of year.

Supply and demand affects the pricing of roses at Valentine’s Day:

There is a huge demand for long-stemmed roses at Valentine’s Day. Men worldwide, traditionally buy a dozen red roses and want their flowers delivered on February 14th. Each phase of production costs more because of the massive volume of red roses required for just one day.

GROWERS: Winter’s shorter daylight hours and higher energy costs hamper efforts to grow large rose crops. To get ready for the huge volume of roses need by February 14th, the farmers have to time the growth of the plants. Essentially they halt production of roses by cutting the stems back (destroy roses) so that they produce a bumper harvest by February 14th. That means normally productive rose plants will not be producing full rose buds weeks before and weeks after the Valentines growth cycle. The cost of stopping everyday production while the Valentines roses are produced is passed on to the consumer.

The bumper harvest will produce up to three times the normal volume of roses typically harvested by the farmer. So they need to hire additional temporary labor to help the permanent staff harvest, process and pack up the roses. Several rosebuds have to be sacrificed just to create a single long stem rose.

TRANSPORTATION: Roses come by plane from Colombia and Ecuador or by lorry from the markets in Holland. The importers pay more for air freight, duty and additional planes have to be used for the extra shipping volume. Also, extra lorries and drivers are needed to haul the roses from the airport to the importer warehouses and to distribute around the country. Inclement weather often requires extreme measures to ensure that flowers are delivered in time. The added transportation costs increases the cost of the roses to the end buyer.

FLORISTS: Florists have to hire additional help, work longer hours and acquire extra delivery vehicles and drivers to design and deliver the extra volume of orders.

WE DO NOT PUT OUR PRICES UP AT PEEK PERIODS AS WE WANT OUR CUSTOMERS TO HAVE THE BEST POSSIBLE VALUE.

Chaos and Chlorophyll: The Riotous Beauty of Cebu’s Street Flower Markets.

Step away from the air-conditioned boutiques. The real soul of Cebu’s floral scene is found on the wet pavement of Ermita, where beauty is a contact sport.

If you want a polite dozen red roses wrapped in imported paper and silence, go to the mall.

But if you want to feel the pulse of Cebu City—if you want to smell the raw scent of thousands of blooms mixed with the morning humidity and hear the symphony of commerce in full swing—you go to the heart of the city. You go near Carbon, deep into Ermita, to the streets where the flower sellers rule.

This is not a delicate garden. This is a jungle of commerce. It is loud, it is cramped, the floors are perpetually wet, and it is utterly magnificent.

The Great Convergence
The magic of the Cebu street market is the lack of boundaries. In many places, markets are segregated—orchids here, funerary flowers there.

Here, everything crashes together.

You have the bagsakan (drop-off point) energy. Jeepneys arrive from the cool mountain barangays of Busay and Sirao before dawn, loaded so high with bundles of gladiolus, mums, and asters that the vehicle looks like a moving hedge.

These mountain blooms tumble onto the street next to styrofoam coolers filled with delicate, expensive imports—Holland tulips and Ecuadorian roses flown in the night before. Next to them sits an Ate patiently threading hundreds of tiny white buds into sweet-smelling Sampaguita garlands for taxi drivers and churchgoers.

It’s a democracy of flowers. The cheap and the expensive, the sacred and the decorative, all sharing the same humid air.

A "Nano-Panorama" of the Hustle: The 30-Second Sale
You asked for a snapshot of the market energy. This is the "nano" moment where sellers merge and sell.

Picture this: It’s 6:30 AM. You are standing in a narrow aisle barely two feet wide. On your left, Manang Linda dominates a mountain of bright yellow Malaysian Mums. On your right, a younger seller, Jun, has buckets overflow with electric-blue dyed orchids.

A customer, a wedding coordinator looking stressed, squeezes between them.

The air instantly electrifies.

Manang Linda (slapping a bundle of mums): "Suki! Diri o! Bag-o abot! Puno kaayo, Ma'am!" (Loyal customer! Over here! New arrival! Very full blooms, Ma'am!)

Jun (leaning over his orchids): "Ayaw diha, Ma'am, laya na! Kini akong orchids, tan-awa, presko pa sa buntag!" (Don't go there, Ma'am, those are wilted! My orchids here, look, fresher than the morning!)

The customer hesitates.

Manang Linda grabs a bundle, shoves it toward the customer's nose. "Humot! Singkwenta na lang!" (Smells good! Just fifty pesos!)

Jun counters instantly. "Hatag nako kwarenta'y singko ang orchids, tulo kabuok!" (I'll give you the orchids for forty-five, three stems!)

The customer points to Linda’s mums. "Tulo ka bundle. (Three bundles)."

In a blur of motion that takes less than five seconds, Linda grabs three bundles, whips out an old newspaper, wraps them tight, ties it with a straw string, takes the cash, and shoos the customer away. "Salamat Suki! Sunod napud!" (Thanks loyal customer! Until next time!)

Then, Linda and Jun look at each other and laugh. The rivalry is fierce, but they are neighbors in the trenches.

Tips for Surviving (and Thriving) in the Market
If you plan to visit this floral mosh pit, come prepared:

Leave the nice shoes at home: The floor is a mix of water, crushed leaves, and mud. Wear sandals that can get wet or old sneakers.

The Early Bird Gets the Blooms: The best action and the freshest flowers are between 5:00 AM and 8:00 AM. By noon, the heat has wilted the flowers and the energy.

Cash is Queen: Forget credit cards or digital apps. Small bills are essential.

Haggle with Heart: Bargaining is expected, but don't be insulting. These sellers work incredibly hard for small margins. A smile and a joke in Visayan go further than an aggressive demand.

The Real Bouquet
When you walk away from Ermita, clutching a bundle of blooms wrapped in yesterday’s newsprint, your feet dirty and your sweat smelling faintly of roses, you leave with more than just flowers. You leave with a piece of the city's resilience.

It’s a reminder that even in the grittiest concrete corners of Cebu, something beautiful is always fighting to bloom.
