Fathers, do not exasperate your children, instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.
—Ephesians 6:4
It is striking that God specifically calls fathers to be actively involved in the spiritual nurture of their children while also warning them not to provoke or discourage them through excessive harshness. Paul’s instruction does not exclude mothers; rather, it highlights the unique and vital role fathers play in a child’s spiritual development. He likely assumes that mothers will faithfully contribute to the training and instruction of their children, but he emphasizes that fathers must also provide intentional guidance, loving leadership, and consistent involvement.
A father’s influence is essential. Through firm yet gentle leadership, clear expectations, and genuine love, fathers help their children understand both discipline and grace. When children see their mother and father united in directing them toward godly behavior, faith, and wisdom, they gain a stronger foundation for life. Fathers have the remarkable privilege of reflecting a loving earthly fatherhood that points their children to the perfect love of their heavenly Father. By nurturing, guiding, and caring for their children well, dads can help them better understand and experience the love of God Himself. 👪
