Why do some microphones perform better on loud stages?

It often comes down to the pickup pattern.

A supercardioid microphone is designed with a tighter front focus and greater side rejection than a typical cardioid pattern. That means it's better at focusing on your voice while rejecting more of the drums, guitar amps, and other sound sources around you.

The result?

✔ Better vocal isolation
✔ Reduced stage bleed
✔ More gain before feedback

✨ One more thing to keep in mind: cupping the grille of a microphone changes its pickup pattern, reducing its ability to reject unwanted stage noise and increasing the likelihood of feedback. While proper mic technique is always recommended, performers whose style includes cupping the mic can benefit from a microphone designed to better handle demanding live environments.

Cardioid and supercardioid microphones each have their place, but when it comes to loud stages, a supercardioid design can offer a real advantage.
