'ANG PANLABAN NATIN IS THE TASTE AND QUALITY OF OUR CHOCOLATES.'

Davao’s chocolate industry is drawing inspiration from neighboring Southeast Asian countries as local entrepreneur Ethan Kyle Lim, founder and CEO of Cacao de Davao, looks to improve the city’s cacao sector through innovation and collaboration.

Lim said countries like Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand continue to expand their chocolate industries through improved manufacturing systems and stronger product packaging. Following visits to Vietnam and Thailand last year, he observed differences in production and marketing strategies that could help strengthen Davao’s local chocolate market.

“Nakita ko kasi ang growth ng Southeast Asian countries they are really striving it, grabe ang expansion ng countries like Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand sa chocolates,” Lim said.

Despite growing competition, Lim emphasized that Davao’s strength remains the taste and quality of its chocolates.

“Ang panlaban natin is the taste and quality of our chocolates. That is why we should maintain the quality and at the same time mag-focus sa pag-expand ng market,” he added.

Cacao de Davao products are currently exported to China, Singapore, Japan, Taiwan, and several European countries.

Lim also highlighted the importance of collaboration within the local chocolate community. His group has partnered with several Davao restaurants to feature locally sourced cacao in curated dishes, including collaborations with Siempre Taqueria and Bar.

The movement also supports Davao’s tourism efforts, with local agencies strengthening farm tourism and food crawls centered on premium homegrown chocolates.
