It is thought that Tarozaemon Minoya, the man who invented agar, is the one who invented Kohakutou, or crystal sweets, during the Edo era. It was then known as Kingyokuto (金玉糖), or "golden sugar," but later on it was dubbed "amber sugar" because it was occasionally coloured with grapefruit or orange peels.
