Book Review: Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

This was beautifully written, and now I understand why it has become such a sought-after novel. There wasn't a single dull moment while reading it. Celeste Ng weaves together multiple storylines so effortlessly that every chapter leaves you wanting to know what happens next.

The story follows Mia's journey—not only as an artist, but also as a sister, a daughter, a mother, and a friend. Along the way, the novel explores thought-provoking themes such as surrogacy, abandonment, adoption, abortion, motherhood, friendship, identity, privilege, social expectations, and the many shades of morality.

What struck me most was that this book doesn't offer easy answers. Instead, it challenges readers to question their own beliefs and reminds us that people often make impossible choices based on love, fear, sacrifice, or survival. Every character is deeply flawed yet incredibly human, making it difficult to label anyone as simply "right" or "wrong."

As a social worker, I found myself reflecting on how family is far more complex than blood or legal ties. The novel highlights the importance of understanding people's stories before passing judgment—a reminder that behind every decision is a lived experience we may never fully see.
Overall, Little Fires Everywhere is a compelling, emotionally rich, and unforgettable read. It's the kind of book that stays with you long after you've turned the final page.

Book Review: A Child Called "It" ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

Reading A Child Called "It" by Dave Pelzer was a unique experience for me. Knowing that it is a true memoir made every page difficult to read, not because of the writing itself, but because of the reality behind it.
As a social worker, stories of child abuse are unfortunately not unfamiliar to me. I read and write similar narratives in social case study reports, so there was never any doubt in my mind that Dave was a severely abused child who endured things no child should ever experience. What impressed me the most wasn't only his survival, but how he managed to rise above his past and build a successful life despite everything he had been through. His story also highlights how abused children can sometimes engage in delinquent behavior—not because they are "bad," but because they are simply trying to survive.
That said, from a reader's perspective, I found myself wanting more emotional depth. The memoir felt more like a straightforward case narration than a deeply immersive story. While the events themselves are heartbreaking, the writing didn't fully draw me into Dave's emotions. Perhaps it was his way of coping, or perhaps my work has given me a higher tolerance for emotionally heavy narratives. Either way, I admired his courage more than I connected emotionally with the storytelling.
Even so, this is an important memoir. It's a powerful reminder that behind every abused child is a story we may never fully understand, and that healing, while difficult, is possible.

Book Review: The Island by Victoria Hislop

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Island by Victoria Hislop completely stole my heart. From the very first pages, I found myself deeply invested in Maria's journey—a young woman born into the shadow of leprosy, who endured unimaginable loss. She lost her mother, her fiancé, and eventually her freedom when she was diagnosed with the same disease and sent to the l***r colony on Spinalonga. Yet despite all the heartbreak, her story is ultimately one of resilience, hope, and the incredible strength of the human spirit.
What amazed me most was Victoria Hislop's storytelling. She doesn't just tell a story—she transports you there. Her descriptions of Spinalonga are so vivid and atmospheric that I felt as though I was walking its streets, watching the sea, and living alongside its people. Every character felt real, every emotion hit deeply, and every chapter made it harder to put the book down.

This is one of those rare novels that stays with you long after you've turned the last page. It's heartbreaking, inspiring, beautifully researched, and written with so much compassion. Without a doubt, this is one of the best historical fiction books I've ever read, and one I'll be recommending for a long time.
