BRINGING THE DOLLS
By Merlie M. Alunan

She has a commanding presence, I couldn't help but be intimidated at first. But then I got to converse with her, and found her to be warm, but also has this no-nonsense attitude, and tells it like it is. I almost found myself regretting telling her I have a hard time understanding poetry, afterwhich she schools me, and breaks down "Bringing the Dolls" for me. She tells me I need to first identify the voice and tone (Whose voice is speaking? In what tone?).

It is about a mother and child who are moving. The mother asks her daughter to leave her doll behind. The mother wanted to bring only the essential, but somehow the child found a way to sneak in her tattered dolls. What matters to us might be different from what our child regards as their treasure. And these dolls can also be our connection from our previous life to our new life.

Thank you for the lesson Merlie M. Alunan and thank you for allowing us to record your reading so late at night (this was after the Edith Tiempo marathon reading). A few days before this, we also sat down and talked in the bookshop, and exchanged ideas for combining her poetry and art (which I didn't know she does as well), and this poetry poster is an outcome of that. These paper cut illustrations are also done by Merlie M Alunan.

Also had the privilege of meeting her daughters, one of whom designed the new cover for Tales of a Spiderwoman, now also available at the bookshop

I was the day's shopgirl, and oh, Claire Betita de Guzman just happened to stop by. We were still on a Duma LitFest* high. She signed her books, and we did an impromptu photo shoot!Β

Good People is an anthology of short stories featuring people who are trying to be good. This has become one of our favorite reads, along with Claire's other books. Grab your signed copies while they last :)Β Β

*Side story: we invited her to a few years back, and in turn, she invited herself this year. Always love her candidness. See you again soon!

There was tuba, budbod, bingka for pamahaw. But the main course was the wonderful istoryahanay with women who write. Merlie Alunan, Geraldine Solon, Mitos Suson, Claire Betita de Guzman, and Yvette Tan represented different literary genres. We enjoyed casually conversing, fangirling over each other, connecting over possible collaborations, and just getting to know one another β€” books and beyond.πŸ“šπŸ’ƒ Dumaguete Literary Festival Arts and Design Collective Dumaguete
