The UN health agency said on Tuesday that it has been in contact with Russian authorities following reports of the death last week of a woman who worked at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute of Siberia and the Far East.

The case and the investigation, led by Russian officials, have revived memories of the COVID-19 pandemic and allegations that the coronavirus may have emerged at a Chinese lab. WHO has not provided a definitive answer to how the pandemic began.

Here’s what to know about the case and how experts are mobilizing after the woman’s death: Pneumonic plague is a form of the disease that affects the lungs.

The incubation period for pneumonic plague — which means lung-based and is the most virulent form of the disease — can be as short as 24 hours, according to WHO. It’s a less common but severe form that can spread between people through respiratory particles.

If untreated, the illness can be fatal, but recovery rates are high if detected and treated in time — within 24 hours of the onset of symptoms, WHO says.

Symptoms include shortness of breath and coughing, often involving the coughing up of blood.

Through an international health alert system, Russian health officials on Tuesday said a full range of preventive measures had been carried out — including tracing of the deceased woman’s contacts, medical monitoring and lab tests.

“Test results showed no presence of dangerous infectious disease pathogens in any of the contacts,” said the note from Russian authorities, which was relayed to The Associated Press by WHO. | via Associated Press

160 thousand homes' worth of water cooled the buildings making AI cartoons.

Data centers are the huge buildings where AI makes cartoons and fake photos. Their computers get very hot, and many of them cool down with water.

In one year, data centers in the US used 17.4 billion gallons of water on site. That is about as much as 160,000 American homes use.

Experts expect that number to grow to between 38 and 73 billion gallons a year by 2028. More AI means more hot computers and more water.

So how much of the earth's fresh water is one AI cartoon worth to you?

A few days ago, a TikToker with a significant following posted several videos portraying APMC as if it were a “haunted hospital.” Based on her own story, she got lost late at night while trying to find the billing area, wandered between floors, encountered three women in an elevator, and later became frightened after being told that the hospital supposedly had ghost stories. She then wondered where the three women had gone and suggested that locked rooms and dark areas made the experience mysterious or paranormal. Since this was turned into several posts rather than a single passing comment, it understandably created an impression about the hospital that went far beyond simply saying, “Naligaw ako.”

And this is where we need to remind everyone: having a social media account—and even having thousands of followers—comes with responsibility.

Freedom to post does not mean freedom from accountability. Philippine law recognizes libel as a public and malicious defamatory imputation that can cause dishonor, discredit, or contempt toward a natural or juridical person; when defamatory material is published online through ICT, the Cybercrime Prevention Act may apply. Whether a particular post actually constitutes cyber libel, of course, depends on the specific facts and legal elements—it is not automatic simply because a business dislikes a post.

There may also be civil liability for actual damage caused by wrongful conduct. Articles 19, 20, and 21 of the Civil Code require people to exercise their rights with justice, honesty, and good faith, and provide remedies where unlawful, negligent, or willfully injurious conduct causes damage. Again, actual liability depends on the evidence and circumstances.

APMC has worked hard to build and protect its reputation as a healthcare institution. We welcome legitimate criticism—especially when it helps us improve. But turning the hospital into paranormal content for views is something entirely different.

And come on, guys. 😅 Sino pa ba ang hindi marunong magtanong kapag nawawala? If you don’t know how to use the elevator or don’t know which floor you’re on, magtanong ka, uy! There are people working inside APMC even late at night.

And please, huwag nating gawing props sa horror content ang mga litrato o posters ng doctors na nakasabit sa labas ng clinics. For the doctors whose faces are being used to make something look creepy, that can feel more insulting than funny.

South Korean author Jeon Gyeong-cheol, known as the "Peter Pan Dad," passed away on September 5, 2026, at 64, after battling terminal liver cancer. For 27 years, he had been the sole caregiver for his son Je-won, who has severe autism.

After his diagnosis, Jeon contacted nearly 1,000 care facilities, searching for a safe place for his son. He shared his journey online under the pen name "Kkokdu," and after his story reached wider audiences, readers raised around $59,000 to help secure Je-won a home.

Jeon also published a book, pledging its proceeds to support adults with severe autism.
