10 UNPOPULAR TIPS PARA SA MGA WORKING LAW STUDENT
Let's be real. There is something quite not right with combining the words “working” and “law student.” One demands your time, energy, and attention during the day, while the other demands even more of those things after office hours. And most of the time, talagang they clash with each other. But it’s not impossible. Mahirap? YES. Pero kaya? KAYA.
Here are 10 tips para sa mga working law students out there:
1. CHOOSE A WORK THAT LETS YOU STUDY
One professor once told our class that the reason you are working is so you can study, not the other way around. Kaya dapat, your job should never become the excuse why you cannot study. Let’s be honest, not all kinds of work are compatible with law school. May mga trabaho na physically and mentally draining to the point na wala ka nang energy magbasa after work. That’s why it’s important to be intentional in choosing work that fits your law school schedule and capacity.
Kung working law student ka, part ng survival strategy mo is finding work that supports your studies, not competes with them.
2. THE BEST STUDY HABIT IS THE ONE THAT IS THE MOST CONSISTENT
In law school, study habit is everything at mas lalo na kapag working ka. You don’t have the luxury of unlimited time, so every available study window really matters. That’s why the goal is not to have the “perfect” study system, but a sustainable one that you can actually stick with. At the end of the day, consistency is the key, and consistency always requires discipline.
3. SLEEP AND REST ARE NOT OPTIONAL
Sleep and rest are important because even if you manage to study, your retention and comprehension are still compromised when you force yourself to push through while already exhausted. Your study time also becomes less efficient when your mind is fatigued.
4. YOUTUBE LECTURES ARE YOUR “SECOND PROFESSOR”
YouTube lectures are underrated in law school. Hindi siya kapalit ng codal or cases, but they serve as your “second professor” when reading time is limited.
You can learn even while doing other things. During commute, breaks, or light tasks, you can listen and still absorb legal concepts without needing to sit down and read.
5. TURNING “IN-BETWEENS” INTO STUDY TIME
One of the most underrated advantages of being a law student, especially a working one, is learning how to use your “in-between” moments. Yung mga in-between moments such as commute, lunch breaks, before meetings or classes are actually hidden study opportunities if you learn how to use them properly. Minsan, it’s those small pockets of time that, when used consistently, make a huge difference in your understanding and retention.
6. CODAL + 1 MATERIAL
Codal as your main base, then isang reliable supplement or commentary lang. And clarity comes from focusing, not multiplying sources.
7. CHOOSE AND USE YOUR LEAVES WISELY
Kung working law student ka, isa sa pinaka practical na strategy is gamitin ang leaves mo during exam weeks.
Sa law school, exam weeks are make-or-break moments. Dito lumalabas lahat ng inaral mo, and this is when you need maximum focus and energy.
Treat your leaves as an academic tool, not just personal rest days. Strategic use of leave can sometimes be the difference between barely surviving and actually performing well in exams.
8. LEARN TO STUDY EVEN WHEN YOU FEEL BEHIND
The reality is, you study while you are behind, not after you fix everything. Progress happens even in imperfect conditions.
9. LEARN TO “LEAVE EVERYTHING AT THE DOOR”
Isa sa underrated survival skills lalo na kung working ka is learning to compartmentalize.
Pagpasok mo ng classroom, leave everything at the door. Ibig sabihin, for that moment, you are not an employee, not a manager, not someone dealing with work deadlines. You are a student of law.
As they say, “compartmentalize.”
10. BE PROUD
In those moments, normal lang makaramdam ng pagod.
That already says something about you, your discipline, your resilience, your quiet courage.
So be proud not because it’s easy, but precisely because it’s not. Be proud even on the days you feel behind. Be proud even on the days you feel like you’re just surviving.
And still, here you are.
