A beautiful antique French Catholic catechism plate, No. 21 – “LA CONFIRMATION,” published by the renowned Maison de la Bonne Presse, Paris, at 5 Rue Bayard.
Dating to approximately 1900–1915, this large illustrated teaching plate presents the Sacrament of Confirmation through a beautifully detailed sequence of religious imagery.
The upper portion depicts the Holy
Spirit descending as a dove, surrounded by radiant rays of divine light. The central scene shows the faithful receiving spiritual strength, while the lower panel depicts the administration of Confirmation inside a Catholic church, with the bishop, clergy, altar, candles and congregation.
The beautifully rendered figures, delicate colors and architectural details are characteristic of French Catholic catechetical art of the period. The original Maison de la Bonne Presse, Paris imprint remains visible along the border.
Measuring an impressive 28 × 20 inches (approximately 71 × 51 cm), it makes a wonderful decorative piece for a collection of antique religious art.
Condition: Antique condition with age-related wear, discoloration and marks to the original backing and edges, consistent with its age. The main image remains beautifully intact.
