MOOER GE100
**P2,000**

The various effects at your disposal are divided into categories, so for example, the different types of distortion, modulation, delay etc. It’s pretty clear cut. The two footswitches are used for scrolling up and down through the effects.

The effects are largely based on existing individual effects pedals: some from Mooer’s own range, others influenced by some of the legendary effects pedals. This is especially prevalent in the distortion category, with Mooer providing takes on pedals such as the Fuzzface or the Tonebender.

Amongst the amps being simulated are names such as Vox, Fender and Marshall. With the amps, even if it’s a beginner in a bedroom playing a 10 watt, solid state amp, with a six-inch speaker, it’s going to sound pretty decent for sure.

A unique feature – probably better associated with electric pianos and keyboards – is a lesson function. This will teach you the basic guitar chords and scales you need for improving your playing, which will also in turn help with what you can achieve from the sounds available.

ZOOM MS-50G MultiStomp
**P5,000**

The MS-50G is the first of its kind, packing a multi-effects pedal and amp modeller into a single-sized stompbox.

What you get is a pedal packed with 55 different sounds (47 effects and eight amp models), six of which can be used simultaneously in any order. Add a chromatic tuner into the equation, and you're looking at a pedal for all seasons.

The sounds in the MS-50G are stored in a total of 50 patch memories. The first 30 come with sounds pre-programmed at the factory, but all can be overwritten. Pressing the central control k**b calls up the patch list, and you can turn the control to scroll through and select patches.

Each patch can be constructed from a chain of six effects blocks, each with a modelled amp or effect, DSP permitting - some effects are hungrier for DSP than others, so not all combinations are possible.

Editing your sounds is pretty straightforward once you've got used to the k**bs and cursors: the horizontal cursors scroll left and right through the blocks in the chain, while the vertical cursors can scroll through all of the amps and effects to select one for the block.

In practice, if you want, say, an auto-wah for one song and a phaser for the next, you will have them saved as patches (possibly consecutively numbered ones for ease), meaning you can simply bend down and press the centre k**b, scroll to the desired patch and press the k**b again.

Rounding off the feature list, holding the footswitch down calls up an automatic chromatic tuner that can be switched to recognise several altered tunings. Alternatively, you can set the footswitch up for tap tempo. There's also a USB connection for firmware updates, which should ensure that the MS-50G stays current.

Muslady Golden Horse
**P900**

The Golden Horse is a budget pedal aimed at replicating the famous Klon pedal, giving you smooth “transparent” overdrive or use it to colour and push your amp into natural overdrive.

It comes in a smaller form factor than most Klon pedals but contains all the same features. As with all Klon-type pedals, you have a Gain k**b, tone control and level control. An input and an output, both of which are on the side of the pedal. The power of the pedal is on the side, and due to the size, this pedal won’t run on a battery. It will only run on a 9v power supply.

The size of the pedal is also very nice! Nice compact and small pedal. Meaning it won’t take up a lot of space on your pedal board, if you only plan to use it now and then, say for a boost, then it is a perfect size! The great thing about these smaller form factor pedals is you can rotate them and fit two “mini” pedals in the same space as a standard pedal. Great for pedals you will only use the odd time.

For low gain and boost sounds, this pedal is perfect. Could be used as a boost for solos, adding a bit more gain to the tone but mainly increasing volume. It can also do those smooth, low overdrive sounds very easily and you can even get some nice high gain sound out of this pedal, using it with high gain and high volume to push an already overdriven amp harder!

KOKKO FOD3 Overdrive
**P900**

It’s small. It has 3 k**bs. It’s green. No, it’s not an Ibanez TS-9, but it’s damn close.

This micro-pedal is one of the many copies of the famous Ibanez TS-9 Tube Screamer available on the market, and it’s one of the most affordable option.

The opening sentences summarizes it well: it’s small, it has 3 k**bs (Drive, Level, and Tone), and it’s green. The footswitch is a true bypass, and it’s powered by a standard 9V 300mA with negative center power adapter. It cannot be powered using a 9v battery, like most micro-pedals. The enclosure is all metal, and it feels sturdy and very much stompable.

This tiny pedal packs a punch and is very similar to the original TS-9. It’s not 100% identical, but it’s close enough. When the Drive is at the minimum, it can be used as a boost, otherwise it’s a very capable overdrive that sounds just like the pedal it’s copying.

The last 10% of the Tone k**b seems to boost both the gain and the volume and is much brighter than the TS-9 is.

There’s not much else to say about this pedal. It’s copying an Ibanez TS-9 and does a good job at it. It’s sturdy, well-made, and green. If you don’t want to splurge on the real deal, this cheap alternative will do the trick just fine.

Behringer VP1 Vintage Phaser
**P3,000** [bnew]

Behringer Vintage Phaser VP1 will surprise you in a positive way. It will deliver the performance that you might not expect from such a unit. It has a warmth to it that definitely makes it reminiscent of the vintage pedals.

The range of rate makes it possible to stay subtle and distinctive, move to a middle-speed category or go completely crazy and produce robotic sounds. When you combine it with Tone switch, you are bound to receive interesting results.

Tone lets you emit inverted phases that are mixed back with your original or unaffected, more traditional ones. If you tweak this thing correctly, you can even create vibrato, that will diversify your options quite a bit.

FLAMMA FS06 Preamp
**P3,000**

The FLAMMA FS06 Preamp is a low-cost pedal that packs in 7 preamp tones. If you’re looking for a way to access a wide range of guitar tones for jamming at home, performing, or recording, you might find this pedal interesting.

Here are the seven preamp models:

Deluxe Blue: based on Fender Blues Deluxe
AC31: based on Vox AC30
Coral Reef: based on Two Rock Coral
Plex 50: based on Marshall Plexi 50
Blue Eye 100: based on Friedman BE-100
MB 5th Gen: based on Mesa Boogie MARK V
HVE 5151: based on EVH 5150

You’re able to save a preset for each preamp, which is a fantastic feature. This means you can dial in the perfect settings you want for one preamp model, then save those settings. Then when you scroll through the preamps and arrive back to that preamp, it applies your saved settings instead of the current k**b positions.

The sound quality of the preamp models is perfectly fine and you would have no hesitation using them as a part of your normal rig. In fact, the Mesa Boogie preamp model sound awesome while jamming at home.

The FS06 includes an optional cabinet simulation if you want the pedal’s output to go directly to a mixer or PA. This can be handy for recording or live performances if you wanted to use the pedal for your amp tone.

Being able to switch from a Marshall Plexi tone to a Mesa Boogie or a VOX AC30 any time you want with the press of a button is a great way to play around with different guitar tones and styles.

There are plenty of multi-effects pedals out there that include a range of great-sounding amp models. But this is the first time you’ll see a variety of preamp models in a single low-cost pedal.

BOSS SUPER OverDrive SD-1
**P3,900** [bnew]

The greatest difference between the SD-1 and Ibanez’s Tubescreamer series is that the Boss generates asymmetrical clipping, as opposed to the more common symmetrical clipping that is produced by the Tubescreamer.

What does this mean?

Well, for one thing it means that the fundamental character of the SD-1’s sound is slightly different than that of a typical overdrive pedal. Symmetrical clipping generates mainly odd harmonics, while asymmetrical clipping generates both odd and even harmonics. This results in a sound that may not be as pure, but that is richer.

When compared to a Tubescreamer, the Boss SD-1 has more volume, and a greater presence of harmonics.

Sounds like a nice option to have in the overdrive market, so why don’t we see more overdrives that feature asymmetrical clipping? Apparently Boss’s parent company, Roland, has a patent on asymmetrical clipping, making Boss’s overdrive series the only mass produced overdrives currently on the market that feature this unique voicing.

Wah’s Going On

Earthquaker Devices (EQD) have a lot of fun with their releases so when they announced their Envelope Filter / Auto Wah people watched!

A lot of players avoid these types of effects as they’re either seen as “Something a bassist uses … ya know, like compressors” or when they’ve tried them in the past they were one trick ponies and that trick wasn’t great.

What EQD have managed to achieve with the Spatial Delivery is a very simple to use pedal featuring a metric tonne of amazing tones.

Yes you can achieve the auto wah effect but there’s so much more going on here even heading into the forbidden realm of SYNTHESIS.

Go, play, enjoy!
