🏛️ GOTHIC ARCHITECTURE: The Structural System That Reached for Heaven ✨
The 5 Key Elements:
🔹 Flying Buttresses — Gothic’s “secret weapon,” transferring lateral thrust from vaults outward and down, freeing walls to become glass.
🔹 Ribbed Vaults — Distribute weight along defined lines, allowing thinner walls and taller ceilings than Romanesque barrel vaults.
🔹 Pointed Arches — Direct loads more vertically than round arches, reducing outward thrust and enabling greater height.
🔹 Stained Glass Windows — Made possible by non-load-bearing walls; used for storytelling and filling interiors with colored light.
🔹 Spires & Verticality — A design philosophy, not just an aesthetic: reaching upward as a symbol of divine aspiration.
💡 Facts:
✦ Notre-Dame de Paris’ flying buttresses were partly a retrofit — added after the original walls showed signs of stress.
✦ Gothic builders had no modern engineering software — proportions were worked out through geometry and guild knowledge passed down for generations.
