Up on the Digest, Sean Carballo examines how San Francisco-based photographer Geloy Concepcion deploys photography as a medium of confession. Visiting the exhibition component of Concepcionโs ongoing project, Things you wanted to say but never did, at the Ateneo Art Gallery, Carballo dissects gaze, anonymity, and intimacy as mechanisms through which lived experiences are rendered tangible, and inquires into the role of the photographer as both witness and keeper of secrets and stories.
โThe photographic medium surrenders to the visceral and the violent, bowing down to private experience, which in the exhibitionโs case is sometimes brutalizing, often traumatic, and always anonymous. Intimacy as imagined in the world of this exhibition is built-in alongside the namelessness of these revelations. Accounts of sexual abuse, su***de, self-harm, and depression linger and reverberate as the photographs themselvesโeven sometimes its very subjectsโmelt, vanishing into the background.โ
