The Lapradei Bichir is a widespread species, found in various slow-moving shallow water habitats in much of lowland tropical West Africa. A large growing and robust species. Polypterus lapradei is one of several so-called “lower jaw” group of Polypterus, so named for their distinctive heavy lower jaw that protrude over the upper lip. In the aquarium, they are hardy and undemanding like most bichir species, but should be kept with a tight-fitting and possibly weighted lid as they will attempt to jump if spooked or at night.

The Silver Arowana, also known as the Dragon Fish or Monkey Fish, is a freshwater fish indigenous to South America. The mouth is at the top of the body of the fish and opens in three pieces. Many oral bones bear teeth, including the jaw, palate, tongue and pharynx. Very large, pearly-silver scales cover their bodies. These scales shift to shades of red, blue and green as the fish ages. They have dorsal and a**l fins that are almost fused with the caudal fin. Males are slenderer and have a longer a**l fin. Arowanas have two barbells at the extremity of the lower jaw. While the adults are silver, juveniles have blue glints and a yellow-orange bar.
