- Sem. Jan Michael Niรฑo N. Torre, Discipleship Year 2

We live in a world where material wealth seems to be the measure of greatness. The more we have, the greater we appear; yet we assume that we cannot be great if we are poor.

In todayโ€™s Gospel, Jesus teaches us the importance of humilityโ€”being concerned for those who are poor.

The story of the rich man and Lazarus is a serious warning from Jesus for our time. We may be tempted to hoard as many things as we can, thinking that they will make us great. But this is actually a warning for those who value material wealth over the needs of others.

Like the rich man in the Gospel who refused to give even a crust of bread to poor Lazarus, we too might beg for a drop of water in the afterlife if we refuse to help others with what we have.

Wealth and poverty in themselves do not make one evil or good; rather, it is what we do with them that defines our moral character.

May we use what we possess to meet the needs of others, rather than keeping it solely for ourselves. For we are not meant to live only for ourselves, but for others. True greatness, then, is measured not by what we own, but by the service we render.

Let us be true disciples of Christ by serving the needs of those who are in need. So be it.

Today we are blessed to celebrate the birthday of our brother seminarian Jan Michael Niรฑo N. Torre.

Jan Mike, may this day bring you thousands of smiles so that you may inspire others to be joyful; a hundredfold increase in wisdom so that you can choose faith over fear; and unfailing strength so that you can navigate the struggles that will accompany you on your priestly journey.

As you celebrate your fifth birthday in the seminary, you have encountered many experiences, both pleasurable and painful. This day should remind you that you have survived those trials and hardships. Be grateful for what youโ€™ve experienced and pray for Godโ€™s guidance for what is yet to come.

As you continue your priestly formation, may you always carry with you the reminder Bishop B**g gave you before your investiture into the cassock: โ€œ๐˜—๐˜ข๐˜ฅ๐˜ข๐˜บ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ! ๐˜—๐˜ข๐˜ฅ๐˜ข๐˜บ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ! ๐˜—๐˜ข๐˜ฅ๐˜ข๐˜บ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ!โ€

As what Fr. Michael Cabellon said, "Your birthday is a reminder that you have a cake to blow out because someone has lit the candles for you." Whenever you feel down, remember that you are not on this journey aloneโ€”someone is at your back, praying for your success.

- Sem. Jan Michael Niรฑo N. Torre

In todayโ€™s Gospel, we hear that Jesus was being followed by a large crowd from Galilee, and He tried to withdraw from them by commanding His disciples to prepare a boat for Him.

When I first read this passage, my initial reaction was: โ€œWhy did Jesus withdraw from the people who needed Himโ€”the sick? Wasnโ€™t healing them part of His mission?โ€ As I reflected, I realized that following Jesus requires more than curiosity or needโ€”it requires true discipleship.

Many times in my faith journey, I prayed only when I needed something from God. I went to Him only when I was in need. That is why, I realize that when I am sick, I act like a hypocrite: โ€œLord, Iโ€™m sorry for my sins. Please heal me. I promise I will not do it again.โ€ Yet in moments when I am comfortable and joyful, I can hardly pause to give Him even a second of thanksgiving.

I see now that sometimes Jesus withdraws from our immediate needs in order to test our faith. He doesnโ€™t answer our prayers instantly because He wants us to persevere in prayerโ€”even when it seems hopeless. This is true discipleship. It is found not in seeking Him only when we need Him, but in thirsting for Him always even when it feels uncertain.

May I be reminded that God remains faithful even when I am unfaithful. I must continue to seek and thirst for him, even when my prayers and needs seem unanswered. So be it.
