I JUST ATE MY OWN WORDS.
For those who have interacted with me before, I have always said that I do not like the AYANEO Pocket S, and that I will never get one for my own. This is due to several reasons:
✴️ Ergonomics is not great. It's a flat candybar unit with no ergonomics. It's literally like a phone with flared triggers that will slip in your hands and will be painful in long sessions.
✴️ It's LCD, not OLED.
✴️ It has 60Hz refresh rate, not that smooth.
✴️ For the brand new SRP price, I'd rather get the Retroid Pocket 6.
But, here we are, holding one, playing and testing it. I have the base 12GB/128GB model with a 1080p screen, and here is my quick hands-on impressions:
✅ The screen is NOT BAD. The saturation is actually quite good for an LCD, so I was pleasantly surprised. Not OLED quality, but still good.
✅ The 60Hz panel is acceptable. If I were nitpicking, it can be better, and I can see a bit of ghosting, but it's... normal. Maybe I've just been too spoiled by high refresh rate screens, but yeah, this isn't as much as a dealbreaker as I thought it would be.
✴️ Ergonomics is still crap. Blocky with a bit of sharp edges. If you're a phone gamer, then I think you'll be fine. But at this point, a lot of other devices will give you better grip and feels.
Overall, it's a slightly lower-tier AYANEO Pocket EVO, and a slightly higher-tier Odin 2. Same performances all together, with just slightly different features. I'm still not keeping this tho, since I have better devices on hand, but this hands-on changed my opinion of the AYANEO Pocket S. It's not as bad as I thought it would be.
