🫁 What To Do When Severe Pneumonia Leads to Cardiac Arrest?
A patient with severe pneumonia may develop respiratory failure, and if the heart stops, the situation becomes a cardiac arrest emergency. Recognizing the change early and responding quickly is critical.
🚨 What should the team do?
✅ Recognize respiratory failure — Watch for worsening breathing, low oxygen levels, and changes in consciousness.
✅ Call for help — Activate the emergency response team and prepare resuscitation equipment.
✅ Assess breathing and pulse — If the patient is unresponsive and not breathing normally, begin CPR.
✅ Start high-quality CPR — Provide effective chest compressions and minimize interruptions.
✅ Use the AED or monitor — Identify the cardiac rhythm and follow the appropriate resuscitation algorithm.
✅ Manage the airway — Support ventilation and provide advanced airway care when indicated.
✅ Give appropriate medications — Administer ACLS medications according to the cardiac arrest algorithm.
✅ Identify reversible causes — Consider hypoxia, electrolyte problems, and other treatable causes.
✅ Continue post-cardiac arrest care — If ROSC occurs, stabilize breathing and circulation and arrange definitive hospital care.
💡 Remember: Severe pneumonia can lead to hypoxia → respiratory failure → cardiac arrest. Early recognition, effective CPR, and coordinated ACLS care can make a difference.
