On March 7, 321 AD, Roman Emperor Constantine the Great issued a civil decree making Sunday a day of rest for the Roman Empire. The law stipulated that judges, city dwellers, and craftsmen should rest, but farmers were exempt to continue their agricultural work. The decree was part of an effort to unite the empire by blending pagan and Christian practices, making "the venerable Day of the Sun" a public holiday.
