THE BROKEN PLACES: POEMS
by Teddy Griarte Espela
Introduction by DM Reyes
Php400.--

Crystalline. In thought and word. Whenever I read a poem in The Broken Places, I feel like stepping into a well-made home “to gain a foothold on each corner.” A space that expands with each breath, where one can easily sit in a corner and revel in its secrets.
DINAH ROMA, Poet and essayist

The Broken Places by Teddy Griarte Espela is a warm sadness. Elegant in both English and Filipino, it hits you like an old love rekindled: calm in its certainty and beautiful in its longings of time past, and near future.
GENEVIEVE L. ASENJO, Poet, essayist and fictionist

The Broken Places carries us an understanding of deep human drama and successfully communicates an inclusive narrative. This book is personal, universal, and of giant imagination. Espela’s book is a gift and an invitation.
SAM ROXAS-CHUA, Fil-Am author of Fawn Language, Echolalia in Script,
and Saying Your Name Three Times Underwater

MEANDERING TO MANILA
by Keith Dalton
Php 895.--

Keith Dalton was 25 when he crammed a typewriter in his backpack and set off from Australia to Southeast Asia, convinced he could be a self-made foreign correspondent.

Writing as he went, Dalton took buses, trucks, trains, planes, passenger ferries, cargo ships, and canoes. Along the way, he suffered malaria, dysentery, kidney stones, and gout. In Borneo, four days upriver in a canoe, he encountered the children of ex-headhunters who had never seen a white man before. Another time, he saw no other white person for more than month.

It took Dalton 18 months to travel through Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Burma, and Borneo before he reached the Philippines, stayed 10 years, and became the foreign correspondent he had always wanted to be.

‘Meandering to Manila’ is about the places, people, and events that he encountered along the way. It’s a fascinating story about a compelling journey.

PRESA: The History and Heritage of Spanish Colonial Dam Building in the Philippines, 1699-1898
By Edgar Allan M. Sembrano
Php. 495.—

This book not only presents the whys and wherefores of dams but also their present status as well and calls for their recognition, if not rehabilitation. Some dams have disappeared under the relentless developer's rollers. Other waters are polluted due to overcrowded settlements and piggeries. Most of the dams written about in this book need government protection and promotion.

KASAYSAYANG PANLIPUNAN NG MAYNILA, 1765-1898 Ikalawang Edisyon
By Ma. Luisa T. Camagay
Php. 325.—

HISTORIA OBSCURA: The Philippines in 16th and 17th Century Portuguese Sources
By Paulo Jorge de Sousa Pinto, Miguel Rodrigues Lourenço, Pedro Pinto, Jeremy Roe
Volume 1: Php. 375.—
Volume 2: Php. 375.—

The information contained in these documents may in general terms be classified into three fundamental themes. The first, and most interesting, but unfortunately the briefest, is first-hand information about the Philippines, their inhabitants and their commercial networks prior to the expedition led by Miguel López de Legazpi in 1565, which marked the beginning of Spanish colonization. The most interesting case is, perhaps, the information about the Luções in Malacca and their links to the sultanate of Brunei. A second perspective that is revealed is the conflict between the Portuguese authorities (namely the captains of Ternate in the Moluccas) and the Spanish expeditions to Asia, which ensued from the time of the voyage made by Magalhães to that of the expedition undertaken by Legazpi. Finally, this corpus also documents the technical instructions and information used for navigation in the form of a series of rutters written to aid sailing between Manila and a range of ports and islands in Southeast Asia and the Far East.

Edited by Fernando A. Santiago, Jr., PhD, Jose Victor Z. Torres, PhD and lan Christopher B. Alfonso

This book examines Southeast Asia not only as a nexus of culture and peoples but also as a site of negotiations and conflicts that emerged from these multicultural interactions. It seeks new ways of seeing this dynamic period by transcending orthodox, Eurocentric views and by incorporating previously under-recognized indigenous sources and narratives.

The ancient political heritage of the Filipino Muslims goes back in origin to pre-Islamic times. From oral as well as written traditions, including subsequent colonial sources, dynamic institutions had already emerged in various parts of the Philippine archipelago long before the advent of Islam in the 13th century.
