La Liga Filipina was founded on this day in 1892.
Dr. Rizal and the members of this society - Deodato Arellano, Andres Bonifacio, Apolinario Mabini, Graciano Lopez Jaena, and Marcelo H. Del Pilar, among others - advocated for the growth and triumph of the Filipino nation. La Liga Filipina was founded on July 3, 1892, in Tondo, Manila.
La Liga Filipina was a precursor to the Cuerpo de Compromisarios, and the Kataastaasan, Kagalanggalangang Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan. The civic organization would assist with loans, scholarship funds, legal aid to its constituency. La Liga Filipina envisioned uniting the people of the archipelago and ridding them of the injustices they suffered. Rizal’s founding of La Liga was one of the reasons the Spanish authorities labeled him as a subversive - though its tenets seem very basic compared to modern-day social programs. The Spanish colonial government ordered his arrest just days later on July 6, 1892.
Plaza Liga Filipina was erected at the location of the residence of Doroteo Ongjungco, where La Liga had been founded.
Featured here is the commemorative stamp released on July 31, 1992. It celebrated the centennial anniversary of the founding of La Liga Filipina. Shown on it is Dr. Jose Rizal in the background, with the constitution of La Liga Filipina occupying most of the stamp.
