Many people thought it's a production error but some books were really designed that way giving them a vintage touch.

I personally thought they look awkward when I got my first deckled edge book, but the more I see them the more I fall in love with it's unique look (an acquired taste, perhaps?). These hardcover copies of The Song of Achilles look really fab with the jagged effect.
