WHY LPG SMELLS🔥

Many Filipinos grow up thinking the familiar smell of LPG is its natural odor, but that is not the case.

Pure LPG is essentially colorless and odorless. The smell people recognize is deliberately added as a safety feature so leaks can be detected before they become more dangerous.

The Department of Energy explains that an odorant such as ethyl mercaptan is added to LPG for this purpose. That strong unpleasant smell acts as an early warning, helping households notice a possible leak even without seeing one.

This means the smell of LPG is not just a normal characteristic of the fuel. It is part of the product’s safety design.

That is also why smelling LPG inside a home should never be ignored. If a leak is suspected, the area should be ventilated and any possible ignition source, such as flames or electrical switches, should be avoided until the situation is checked properly.
