In celebration of History Month, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) presents Confluence of Currents: The Galleon Trade in the BSP Collection.

Exhibit Spotlight: Dos Mundos or "A Piece of Eight" coin.

The Dos Mundos coin was first minted in 1732 and was one of the most widely used coins of its time.

It's a version of the "piece of eight," which was one of the most widely used coins in the world during the 1500s-1800s, the height of Spain's power, which coincided with the Galleon Trade. It was valued for its consistent weight and silver fineness. It's often mentioned in literature, including pirate stories.

Its obverse features the Spanish coat of arms. Its reverse features the dos mundos, two globes representing the Old and New Worlds, flanked by two pillars with a banner inscribed “Plus Ultra” ("more beyond"). It's also called the pillar coin.

This commemorative coin was issued in 2018 to mark the 100th birth anniversary of the late Chief Justice Claudio Teehankee Sr.

Although the authorized mintage was limited to 3,000 pieces, this coin is rarely encountered today. The Teehankee Foundation initially released 750 pieces as the first batch in 2018.It is unclear whether succeeding batches were issued, making the actual number released significantly lower than the original mintage limit might suggest.

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) joins the nation in commemorating the 84th anniversary of Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor).

Issued in 1992 to mark the 50th anniversary, this coin honors the bravery and sacrifice of those who fought during World War II, especially in the Battle of Bataan in 1942. The obverse (front side) features a Filipino soldier, the Philippine flag, and Dambana ng Kagitingan, a memorial shrine on Mount Samat dedicated to those who defended the country. The reverse side bears the seal of the Republic of the Philippines.
