So every one of you who is present (at his home) during that month should spend it in fasting, but if any one is ill, or on a journey, the prescribed period (Should be made up) by days later. Allah intends every facility for you; He does not want to put to difficulties. (He wants you) to complete the prescribed period, and to glorify Him in that He has guided you; and perchance ye shall be grateful.

Alternative to GDP:

In the recent past global perspective of measuring economies have dramatically changed and alternative of GDP is finally in debates and if accepted might be an end of GDP. The assumption GDP takes is that:

“The welfare of a nation can scarcely be inferred from a measurement of the national income.”

The actual fact is far more different from what it actually assumes, as many nations including USA has a grown GDP but their economies have gone down. The recent concept presented as an alternative to GDP is Social Progress Index (SPI) developed by Professor Michael E. Porter (of Harvard Business School) and Social Progress Imperatives, has given a greater insight to Social and Environmental needs of citizens rather than just focussing on Economic indicators as per GDP.

According to their research they believe that these two factors are actually controlling the economies in today’s world. This fact can be proved by Human Development Index (HDI) developed in 1990, which is majorly considered to be a measuring tool for Equality. Nations with highest HDI are amongst the highest GDP generating economies also. SPI and HDI if seen in context of measuring national performance can be assumed to be interrelated to each other. As high Social and Environmental development will increase the livelihood of individuals and thus it will increase the overall HDI and these both in conjunction will increase the welfare of nation.
Though SPI is in its initial stage but its overall concept is not only being accepted by the majority of Economist, Society and relevant industry but is also highly appreciated. SPI is more complex in nature and involves “rigorous” measurements to form an opinion on national performance. It is more focused on identifying underperforming areas and assisting governments solving problems from initial level.

This measurement will be a breakthrough and the most influential tool developed in the last 80 years. It will not surprising if by the beginning of the next decade GDP will be not be considered effective tool of measurement and the real reasons for recent collapse will be unveiled.
