The government has started preparations for the upcoming federal budget, with a focus on reducing import duties and removing non-tariff barriers in line with commitments made to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Sources indicate that Pakistan has agreed to eliminate non-tariff barriers on 76 HS codes as part of broader trade reforms. In total, more than 2,600 such barriers are expected to be phased out by June 2026 to enhance trade efficiency and market access.
The planned reduction in import duties aims to boost international trade, lower production costs, and improve competitiveness across key sectors. Officials say these steps are part of a broader strategy to align Pakistan’s trade framework with global standards.
The review of export and import policy orders will be conducted in phases, with completion targeted by November 2026. These reforms are expected to streamline regulations and ease compliance for businesses.

Azerbaijan’s state energy company SOCAR has expressed readiness to supply liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Pakistan, offering an alternative fuel source as disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz threaten existing supply routes.
The company highlighted that a framework agreement signed in 2025 between Socar Trading and Pakistan LNG Limited enables Pakistan to procure LNG cargoes through a fast-track mechanism. SOCAR stated it can proceed as soon as Pakistan LNG Limited submits a formal request.
The offer comes at a time when Pakistan is actively seeking spot LNG cargoes to manage a growing energy shortfall. With declining domestic gas production and increasing uncertainty in global LNG markets due to Middle East tensions, the country remains heavily reliant on imports.
Recent disruptions linked to the Strait of Hormuz — a key global energy corridor — have further intensified the situation. Officials from Pakistan’s Petroleum Division revealed that four LNG cargoes from Qatar have been halted after Iran reportedly closed the strait.
Pakistan State Oil, which was managing these shipments under agreements with QatarEnergy, has informed authorities that deliveries are suspended until conditions in the region stabilize.

The State Bank of Pakistan confirmed receiving $1 billion from Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Finance, marking the second tranche of a $3 billion deposit agreement.
The first $2 billion was transferred earlier in April 2026. Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb said the funds aim to support Pakistan’s balance of payments, while an existing $5 billion Saudi deposit has been extended for three years.
The assistance comes as Pakistan faces a $3.5 billion repayment to the UAE, adding pressure on foreign reserves. Saudi Arabia has consistently supported Pakistan during financial crises.

Pakistan has partnered with the International Finance Corporation to install 10 million smart electricity meters, modernizing its power system.
The IFC will guide planning and help attract investors for funding, installation, and maintenance. These smart meters will enable real-time monitoring, reduce electricity theft, improve billing accuracy, and limit manual work.
The initiative also cuts meter costs by 40% and ensures all new connections use smart meters, while existing ones will be gradually upgraded. This step aims to boost efficiency, transparency, and financial stability in the power sector.

Pakistan’s airspace restrictions on Indian-operated flights have now entered their second year, continuing to impact regional aviation and travel routes.
The ban, initially imposed amid heightened bilateral tensi*ons, remains in place, forcing airlines to take longer alternative paths that increase flight time, fuel consumption, and operational costs. The ongoing closure has also affected connectivity between South Asia and other international routes that pass through the region.
Despite discussions in broader diplomatic contexts, no resolution has been announced so far. The situation continues to reflect the strained relationship between the two neighbors in terms of air travel cooperation.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has given in-principle approval for the province’s first Sky Glass Bridge project in Kotli Sattian, aimed at boosting tourism.
The decision was made during a special meeting co-chaired by PML-N President Nawaz Sharif and the chief minister, where progress on the Murree Protection and Rehabilitation Plan was reviewed.
The meeting also agreed to bring in international experts to tackle landsliding issues in Murree. Maryam Nawaz directed immediate steps to address downhill erosion and ordered relief and rehabilitation measures in affected areas including Chatta Mor, Darya Gali, Bansera Gali, Naml, Jhika Gali, and nearby regions.
Additionally, approval was granted to establish three new hospitality zones in Murree’s outskirts—Shawala, Sozo, and Brewery—where five-star hotels will be developed in partnership with the private sector.
A team of experts will also be formed for the Murree rehabilitation project, while the chief minister instructed authorities to promptly remove debris from structures demolished during anti-encroachment operations.
