Xiaomi Surpasses Apple as The 3rd Biggest Smartphone Maker in The World

Samsung recently reclaimed its spot as the world’s number 1 Smartphone maker from Huawei, according to an industry report from Canalys. Now, new industry reports are showing that the top 3 list has been upset once again as Xiaomi has surpassed Apple to join the fray.

The Chinese company displayed an impressive performance in Q3 2020 to join the top 3 list while Huawei retained its spot among the top ranks. The table below shows each company’s smartphone shipments as well as their market share.Samsung showed a healthy increase of 2-3% in terms of sales, while Huawei dipped 20% due to the US restrictions. Xiaomi gained over 40% compared to last year and dethroned Apple as one of the top 3 phone makers.

The report from IDC says that the smartphone market has witnessed strong volumes between July and September originating from regions like Brazil, India, Russia, Indonesia, etc. According to IDC’s research director Nabila Popal, the increase in volume was caused by pent-up demand but mostly due to heavy promotions and discounts offered.

Moreover, distance learning caused by the pandemic boosted demand for low-end Smartphones in India as they are cheaper than affordable tablets. This brought competition to a different level, putting pressure on companies.Realme was one of the companies to show remarkable performance during the period as it managed to reach 50 million shipments faster than any other company due to its diverse 5G portfolio and strong performance in China. The brand managed to do so in only 9 months, which was a 90% increase compared to the last quarter.

However, developed markets such as China, North America, and Western Europe suffered major declines in Q3 2020 and this was mainly due to Apple launching the iPhone 12 in October instead.

The latest update to Honor’s 10X lineup comes as the Honor 10X Lite, which, as the name suggests, is a cheaper alternative to the Honor 10X 5G and 10X 5G Max. For $213, it brings mid-range specs, but a large 5,000 mAh battery with 22.5W fast charging.
The design of the handset is quite similar to the rest of the phones in the series with a punch-hole front camera and a large rectangular primary camera on the back. The 6.67-inch display is an IPS LCD panel with FHD+ resolution and minimal surrounding bezels. The fingerprint sensor is mounted on the side atop the power button.

Internals and Storage
Under the hood, you get Huawei’s Kirin 710 SoC with 4GB RAM and 128GB storage that is expandable through a microSD card. This chipset brings a 2.2GHz octa-core CPU and the Mali G51 GPU which allows for reliable mid-range gaming.

The device boots Android 10 with Honor’s Magic UI 3.1 on top. There are no Google apps or services on-board and you get Huawei’s alternative HMS instead.

Cameras
There is a 48MP primary camera on the back which is accompanied by a 5MP ultrawide lens, and a pair of 2MP lens for portrait shots and macro photography. This camera can record 4K videos and 1080p videos at 30 FPS.
The punch-hole front camera is an 8MP shooter capable of capturing HDR photos and full HD videos.

Battery and Pricing
The battery compartment features a large 5,000 mAh power cell equipped with 22.5W fast charging. It can charge up the device up to 46% in just 30 minutes.

The Honor 10X Lite will be available in Icelandic Frost, Midnight Black, and Emerald Green color options for $213.

LG has become one of the lesser-known phone companies lately due to its steadily declining earnings and market share in the industry. However, the company posted its earnings report for this year’s 3rd quarter and the results are looking promising.he company reported an operating income of $1.34 billion in the July-September period and this was a 17% quarterly increase. Despite that, LG is still at an operating loss of $124.9 million for Q3, but at least it is less than last quarter’s $169.1 million.
LG’s overall sales improved in major phone markets including North and South America. The new rotating LG Wing, the LG Velvet, and Q51 were listed as the key Smartphones for LG in the past quarter. These improved figures were achieved by increased production efficiency and better than expected sales for budget smartphones.

Even though the sales figure is the same as Q3 last year, it is an improvement over all the previous quarters in 2020 so far. These numbers are expected to grow further as the company has launched a handful of new devices recently.

Additionally, LG will continue to focus on the American market and hopes to see more demand for budget smartphones as well as 5G models.

It is no news by now that phone makers are slowly transitioning towards the foldable form factor similar to the Galaxy Fold, Motorola Razr, and the Huawei Mate X. Xiaomi is one of the companies that is rumored to be working on a foldable phone for a while and now the latest reports show us what to expect.

The Chinese company teased a tri-folding phone two years ago which appeared in two short videos. There was no mention of this device again but later the company unveiled the Mi Mix Alpha, which was only a concept phone that never made it to shelves.
Now after years of leaks and teasers, folks over at XDA have spotted code in the latest build of MIUI 12 for the Mi 10 Pro that suggests that the company may be working on a foldable smartphone.

According to XDA’s report, this folding phone is codenamed “Cetus” and will boot MIUI based on Android 11. In terms of hardware, it will be powered by one of Qualcomm’s latest SoCs with a 108MP camera. Other specifications for the mysterious foldable are currently unknown.

In any case, since Xiaomi usually offers high value for money products, this mysterious foldable could be the cheapest folding phone in the market once it hits the shelves. However, it may be limited to China like some other of the company’s premium products.
