Some time ago, I finished another authentic replica—one that will now join a wall of shields in... Norway! Interestingly, it won't end up in the hands of a Viking, but rather a Slavic mercenary fighting in the ranks of Scandinavians in the North 🇳🇴
cheers 💪

The shield represents a compromise between authenticity of ex*****on and durability for modern reenactment battle use.

Details:
▪️85 cm diameter, 8mm pine planks tapered to 5mm at the edges
▪️both sides covered with parchment using bone glue
▪️forged boss, ash-wood handle riveted with forged nails
▪️vegetable-tanned leather strap with ring pins and a hand-forged buckle
▪️rim protected with 3mm-thick hard raw leather using waxed linen thread (waxed with beeswax)
▪️egg tempera painting using historical pigments
▪️4.2 kg weight

Moja replika została w całości ręcznie uszyta lnianą nicią z czterech kawałków cienkiej owczej skóry, uprzednio utwardzonej i zaimpregnowanej woskiem pszczelim dla dodatkowej ochrony przed przemakaniem. System doszytych rzemieni pozwala związać zrolowany tegimen i przytroczyć go reszty noszonego ekwipunku.

🇬🇧 Roman shield cover

When Roman legionaries were not using their shields in combat, they often covered them with leather covers known as a "tegimen" or "tegimentum". These were crafted specifically to protect against rain, sun, and other environmental factors. Anyone involved in historical reenactment or the use of historically accurate shield replicas knows that such elements can severely damage the paintwork or compromise the structural integrity of the shield itself. Numerous archaeological finds—such as those from Valkenburg in the Netherlands or Vindonissa in Switzerland—confirm that these covers were a vital part of a soldier's equipment. They were often decorated with leather patches ("tabula ansata") featuring cut-out legion numbers or symbols (such as the Capricorn). The cover itself was made from one or more pieces of supple leather and tightened around the shield's rim using a system of straps or cords, ensuring a snug, watertight fit. Beyond archaeological evidence, the widespread use of these covers is also confirmed by written sources. For instance, in his "Commentaries on the Gallic War", Julius Caesar describes a battle against the Nervii (a Celtic tribe) in 57 BC; his legionaries did not even have time to don their helmets or remove their leather "tegimentum" because the enemy charged with such speed and fury that they were forced to fight with their shields still encased in the covers.

My replica was entirely hand-stitched using linen thread and crafted from four pieces of thin sheepskin, which had been hardened and treated with beeswax for added water resistance. A system of attached straps allows the rolled-up "tegimen" to be tied and secured to the rest of the carried gear.

🇬🇧A shield from the Late Bronze Age (ca. 1200-800 BC)

Many examples of Bronze Age ceremonial/? shields have survived from northern Europe, mostly made of metal, but finds made of organic materials are much rarer. Archaeological evidence reveals only one shield made entirely of leather and one made entirely of wood (made from a single piece of alder). This wooden shield was discovered in the 19th century in Kiltubbrid, Ireland, and was likely used in battle, as it showed signs of weapon impact. The small size of Bronze Age shields is also surprising, averaging 50-60 cm in diameter.

✅My shield:
Diameter: two lengths of my hand 👋 approx. 40 cm
Wood: one piece of oak, thickness varies depending on how I carved it by axe, on average 1.5-2 cm at the edge
Shield: boss glued on, inner diameter approx. 10 cm
Weight: 1780 g

Waga: 1780 g

This weekend (May 2-3), the time machine at the Rezerwat Archeologiczny w Kaliszu-Zawodziu will send you back 2,000 years to ancient Calisia (Kalisz) during the "###I Archaeological Market." ⏳ This city was described by the ancient Romans as one of the most important stops on the Amber Road from the Roman Empire to the Baltic Sea. 🏛️🌊

Craftsmen, traders, barbarian warriors, Roman legionaries, and gladiators are just a glimpse of what will be happening there (and there will be a lot happening...)! ⚖️⚔️

My family and I will take on the role of representatives of the Przeworsk culture, from what is now Poland, associated with the famous warrior tribe of the Vandals 😄 As part of craft project, Szczytnik - Shields with History, we will showcase various forms of shields from the ancient era and demonstrate how they were made in the era of Homer and Tacitus. 🛡️ Join us!
