🎃Remember “Vicked Viki”? Well, I have some very bad news for you. SHE HAS A SISTER! 😱
She’s just popped out from under my sewing needle and announced that her name is Hela.
Unfortunately, after the first five minutes of talking to her, I realised there’s just no escaping genetics. 🙄
“Hey, Kate! Just so you know, I’m even naughtier than Viki!”
“Of course you are.”
“And darker!”
“I’m sure.”
“And scarier!”
“I can tell.”
“And I can do MAGIC!”
That’s when I started getting suspicious.
Because exactly a year ago, her sister Viki also tried to convince me that she was a powerful witch, an expert in dark magic, and generally someone you’d better not mess with because she could turn you into a pumpkin! To this day, she hasn’t turned anyone into one....not even a small one.
But Hela insists that she comes from the more magically gifted branch of the Lullu family.
“Viki’s still young. She doesn’t know much. I have POWERS.”
“What kind?”
“Different kinds.”
“For example?”
A moment of silence.
“…I haven’t tested them all yet.”
“Right.” 😂
Then we moved on to the outfit.
Naturally, Hela demanded something “dark, witchy and scary enough to make everyone realise immediately that I mean business.”
So, for starters, she got a huge witch’s hat. And that’s where I made my mistake. Because before I knew it, Hela had started decorating it.
First some autumn leaves, then a couple of tiny pumpkins, another leaf, a little more orange…
“Hela, it was supposed to be DARK!”
“IT IS DARK! These are dark autumn leaves!”
“Ah.”
Then she chose an orange outfit.
“Hela…”
“HALLOWEEN IS ORANGE!!!!”😱
Hard to argue with that.
Finally, we got to the accessories.
And this was when Hela announced that she needed something that would truly make people’s blood run cold!
“A SPIDER!!!”
“A real one?”
“Kate! You crazy or what?! 😳”
…so apparently we’re afraid of spiders.
After some brief negotiations, we settled on a plastic spider. A huge, black and terrifying one. Hela told me to sew it onto her bag so that, from a distance, it would look like she wasn’t scared of it at all.
“Just make sure you sew it on really well, okay?”
“So it doesn’t fall off?”
“No. So it… doesn’t escape.”
😂
And that’s how Hela came to be.
A mighty witch. The terror of the neighbourhood. Vanquisher of humans, monsters and every other terrifying creature imaginable. (As long as none of those terrifying creatures happens to be a real spider.)
But that’s not the end of the story.
Because when it was time for the photo shoot, Hela announced that she needed a prop that would prove her extraordinary magical powers once and for all. She looked around the garden. And found a chestnut.
“Oh! This will do!”
“For what?”
“I’ll enchant it.”
“Into what?”
“I don’t know yet.”
And for the past fifteen minutes or so, she’s been standing there with that chestnut in her hand.
Staring at it. Frowning. Muttering various “hocus-pocus-abracadabra” type things under her breath. She’s even waved her hand three times and done the splits once.
So far, the chestnut remains a chestnut.
Hela claims that’s only because it’s still too early and real magic doesn’t start working until it gets closer to Halloween.
I’m no expert, so I’m not going to argue. 🤷♀️
And now, on a slightly more serious note. ❤️
Hela is the younger sister of last year’s “Vicked Viki”, and just like her sister, she was born somewhere between two of my favourite things: autumn and Halloween. 🍂🎃 I didn’t want to make a typical Halloween witch, though. I wanted her to be our own Lullu-style little sorceress - a little bit autumn, a little bit Halloween, slightly dark and mysterious, but most importantly, the kind whose “scariness” ends pretty much exactly where her smile begins. 🙂
Hence the autumn colours, pumpkins and leaves on her hat, chestnuts, enormous black boots and, of course, that ULTRA-TERRIFYING SPIDER BAG!
And just like last year, I have a feeling I’ve created a little witch who desperately wants to strike fear into everyone she meet...but would probably invite you in for a cup of cocoa before she ever managed to turn you into a pumpkin. 😂
🎃🎃🎃 And now for the most important question:
What do you think — what is Hela trying to turn that chestnut into? 😁
Because she refuses to tell me. She says it’s “a secret of the witching trade.”
My guess? She doesn’t know either. 😂
