SOULNOTE Kato’s "One Thing I Have to Say" Series: Part 13/14
[My Take on the Measurement Section]
Did you happen to read the recent *Stereophile* review of the A-3 core? If you haven't yet, I’d appreciate it if you took a look at it first.
Now, as I always say, I have absolutely no interest in measurements. It’s not just that it’s a hassle; I actually feel that relying on them can lead to misjudging the sound. After all, if the measurements were bad enough to affect the sound audibly, you’d hear it anyway. (Haha)
I only perform measurements when absolutely necessary—such as for catalog specifications or factory inspections. For instance, if a customer asks, "What is the value for X?", I simply reply, "We haven't measured it" (because I haven't, and I have no intention of doing so). So, in a way, I’m grateful that a third party (*Stereophile*) performed rigorous measurements for us for free.
That said, I was surprised that the A-3 core received such high marks in the measurements. Even though I don't measure things myself, isn't it kind of cool when a third party gets great results? (Haha)
With that in mind, I’d like to briefly explain a few points where the results differed from our catalog specifications.
First, regarding the A-3 core's gain: both the catalog and the owner's manual should list it as 22 dB. As the measurement section pointed out, a maximum of 33 dB is indeed the spec for the standard A-3 model. It seems the A-3 core's gain was listed as 33 dB somewhere, but... that remains a mystery.
Also, regarding maximum output: it is certainly standard practice to measure at the point where THD reaches 1%. This is because, in typical solid-state amplifiers with negative feedback, "clipping"—the point where the waveform suddenly begins to flatten out—occurs around the 1% mark. This results in a sound that is audibly unpleasant—what is known as "hard distortion." In contrast, all of our non-feedback amplifiers exhibit "soft clipping" characteristics; waveform deformation becomes faintly visible starting around 5% THD. Even then, the distortion manifests gradually, so it is not particularly noticeable to the ear. Regarding the specification of maximum output, there is no strict standard defining exactly where this point should be set; it is left to the manufacturer's discretion. I believe it is appropriate to define it based on the point where the waveform clearly begins to clip. With that in mind, I specify the output at 3% THD—a non-clipping level that allows for a bit of headroom. This results in a rating of 120W into 4 ohms, a figure that aligns perfectly with the point identified by *Stereophile* magazine (the "knee" point where distortion begins to rise sharply).
Furthermore, *Stereophile*'s measurement process was truly excellent—highly valid and accurate. They demonstrated genuine respect for the product, such as by ensuring a thorough warm-up period before taking measurements.
I would certainly love for them to test the P-3 and our other equipment as well. The results would likely be even more impressive. 😊
