Wojciech Jagielski received the special Pióro Nadziei (A Pen of Hope) award for lifetime achievement in a competition organized by the Amnesty International Association. This is a distinction for journalists, creators of culture, who strengthen human rights through their work. “Wojciech Jagielski's achievements and work for human rights are admirable. His texts, which bring the figure of the Other closer, fight against stereotyping and simplification of reality to fit our imaginations. Wojciech Jagielski's contribution to the understanding of human rights cannot be overestimated. These are texts about other cultures, but also deeply human ones,” commented Anna Błaszczak-Banasiak, director of Amnesty Poland.

In this year's edition of the Newsweek Polska competition named after Teresa Torańska in the "Best Book" category, the winner was Anna Bikont for the publication "Cena. W poszukiwaniu żydowskich dzieci po wojnie” (Wydawnictwo Czarne) – a journalistic investigation that sheds new light on the fate of children after the Holocaust.

The prize is awarded annually to the best authors, participants of social, economic and political life, as well as exceptionally talented young people in the following categories: the prize in the "Best Journalistic Material" category, covering material published in the press or broadcast in the media (radio, television); award in the "Best Book" category for a non-fiction book published in Polish, and the "Newsweek" Teresa Toranska Award - for public activity.

Who was Teresa Torańska?

Teresa Torańska was a great Polish journalist and writer, and author of the famous book Them: Stalin's Polish Puppets, which included interviews with prominent Polish communist dignitaries. She was born in 1944 in Vawkavysk and died on 2nd January 2013 in Warsaw.

European Union Prize for Literature - we know the Polish nominee!

Since 2009, Poland has been participating in the competition for the European Union Prize for Literature (EUPL). The national organizer of the competition is the Polish Chamber of Books, Polska Izba Książki. The competition is attended by 13 or 14 countries out of 41 participating countries. That means that each country competes every three years.

So far, the winners from Poland have been: Jacek Dukaj (2009), Piotr Paziński (2012), Magdalena Parys (2015) and Marta Dzido (2019). The award enabled the authors to promote and finance the translations of the winning novels. And so, Jacek Dukaj's award-winning book "Ice" has been translated into nine languages, Piotr Paziński's book "Pensjonat" into fourteen, Magdalena Parys's "Magik" into eleven, and Marta Dzido's "Frajda" into five foreign languages.

This year, the jury of the EUPL Competition changed the rules of the competition so as to increase its promotional potential. National organizers nominate one book for the European final of the competition. Six winners will be selected from the list of these thirteen nominated authors, including one grand prize winner.

The winning title from Poland, a candidate for the EUPL 2023 Award, was Sabina Jakubowska's book "Akuszerki", Wydawnictwo Relacja. Congratulations!
