Is a 3PL the right fit for your business?
Not every e-commerce business needs a 3PL. And choosing one too early can be just as unnecessary as waiting too long.
If you are launching a new brand and realistically expect fewer than 200 orders per month during your first six months, going through a 3PL integration may not be the best use of your budget and time. A simpler and cheaper logistics solution will often do the job. Invest in generating sales first. Once the volume is there, you can look for a logistics partner that fits the business you are actually building.
But there is another side to this.
We also see brands that grow quickly and wait too long. Orders increase, more people get involved in packing, stock becomes harder to control, returns pile up and suddenly the in-house setup has reached its limit. Moving to a 3PL at that point is still possible, but now you are trying to integrate new systems and move stock while dealing with an operational problem at the same time.
If you see that growth coming, it is better to start looking before you hit that ceiling.
And order volume is not the only reason to consider a 3PL.
If you are preparing to sell across several European markets, need kitting or other value-added services, have products requiring batch or expiry tracking, or your fulfilment is becoming more complex for other reasons, outsourcing can make sense at an earlier stage.
At Internel, this is what we look at before talking about a setup.
