Today, Viejo San Juan is losing part of its soul.
For years, we have watched mature trees disappear from our historic streets, plazas, and communities. What once provided shade, beauty, fresh air, and refuge for birds and wildlife is slowly being replaced with heat, cement, and emptiness.
This is not just about landscaping.
This is about health, climate, culture, and community.
Trees in Viejo San Juan are part of our identity. They cool our streets during extreme heat, improve air quality, reduce flooding, protect biodiversity, and make our city livable for residents, elders, children, and visitors alike.
Every large tree cut down takes decades to replace.
Many of the newly planted trees do not survive long enough to restore what was lost.
Scientists and environmental agencies have repeatedly shown that urban trees reduce temperatures significantly and absorb harmful carbon emissions. In a warming Puerto Rico, protecting mature trees is no longer optional — it is essential.
We are asking our community to stand together and demand:
• An immediate stop to unnecessary tree cutting in Viejo San Juan
• Environmental and community impact evaluations before approving removals
• Protection of existing shaded areas and mature trees
• Transparent communication from local authorities
• Long-term reforestation efforts with trees capable of thriving for generations
• Community participation in conservation and planting initiatives
This petition is about preserving the character, beauty, and environmental future of Viejo San Juan for our children and future generations.
