A lot of surfers think big waves need big fins. Actually, it's the opposite.

This video explains, in simple terms, what a surfboard fin really does and why a smaller fin is the better choice in big waves.

In it, a fin breaks mid-turn, so you can see the difference between what a fin does when it's there and what's missing the moment it's gone.

Then the numbers. On a one-metre wave, your fin carries around 7 kilos. On a six-metre wave, it's around 63 kilos. Same fin. That's why what works in small waves becomes too much in big ones.

Why a wide board or thick rails throw you out of a barrel.

The weight of the surfer is the same, so the rail sits no deeper in the wave. But the wider or the thicker the board, the further your feet sit from the balance point. Then it rolls and you fall.

Do surfers need smaller fins in bigger waves? Simple question.

I'm making a short video about exactly that question. I asked AI to help me with structuring the video script. Uninvited, it started talking about "drive." So I challenged it: okay, explain what drive actually is. Show me.

It produced diagram 1 below.
The "grip" arrow is pointing in the same direction as the movement of the board. Really?

So I pushed back. It apologised and tried again — diagram 2.
Now drive is gone and you have only drag? Strange.

The information about surfboard hydrodynamics floating around the internet is full of half-truths. AI can only reflect the fog that's already out there. It can't see through it.

Something we often noticed in the shop: surfers walk in asking for a specific tail shape … but nobody ever asks for a 2.5” tail rocker.

Yet rocker has way more impact on how a board actually rides.

Tail shape matters, but is often overestimated. As Rusty Preisendorfer says: ‘It’s the whole package that counts, tails are embellishments.
