Before Anjelica Huston made Morticia iconic in The Addams Family, Cher was a serious choice for the role. In an earlier version of the project, she was attached to play Morticia opposite Kevin Kline, and even after the film changed creative hands, the studio still wanted Cher.

Barry Sonnenfeld and producer Scott Rudin ultimately preferred Huston, arguing that the Addams Family itself should be the star. Sonnenfeld later said they didn’t need "star actors", but "excellent actors".

But by 1990, Cher wasn’t simply a star.

She was already an Oscar winner for Moonstruck, an Oscar nominee for Silkwood, Cannes Best Actress for Mask, and a three-time acting Golden Globe winner. She had spent years doing scripted sketch comedy before proving herself in Come Back to the 5 & Dime, Silkwood, Mask, Suspect, The Witches of Eastwick, Moonstruck and Mermaids.

And Cher had already proved she could serve an ensemble. Silkwood remained Meryl Streep’s film. Mask remained Rocky’s story. Witches gave Nicholson, Pfeiffer and Sarandon equal space. Moonstruck won Cher the Oscar while Olympia Dukakis also won and Vincent Gardenia was nominated. Mermaids still gave Winona Ryder and Christina Ricci their own moments.

Even Anjelica Huston herself wondered: "Why not Cher?"

Huston was brilliant. This isn’t about replacing her. It’s about recognizing that Cher as Morticia made complete sense.

And maybe it’s not too late for the Addams universe.

give Cher a real character: Eudora Addams, Gomez and Fester’s mother. Warm, elegant, eccentric, darkly funny; the grandmother Wednesday can’t quite figure out and the mother-in-law Morticia genuinely adores after her complicated relationship with Hester.

Not a "CHER!" cameo. No diva gimmick. Give us the actress: deadpan comedy, family history, one great emotional scene, and that unmistakable Addams darkness underneath the sweetness.

We missed Cher as Morticia. Don’t make us miss Cher as an Addams again. 🖤
