[ Confeitaria Nacional - Nearly 200-year-old Family Patisserie That Serves 🇵🇹 PORTUGAL's Royals and Presidents @ LISBOA ]

Founded in 1829 during the time of Civil War fighting over rights to succession to the throne of PORTUGAL, it couldn't stop Balthazar Roiz Castanheiro from opening a patisserie 🥐🥖🫓🥨🥯🍩🍪🍰🧁☕️ - Confeitaria Nacional in the city centre of LISBOA establishing a renowned reputation for serving some of the finest pastries in PORTUGAL 🇵🇹 ... 😻😽😻😽😻😽

Whilst Balthazar Castanheiro Júnior updated the patisserie with modern conveniences, it was of utmost importance to keep using these unique and original recipes as a well-kept secret 🤫📜 in maintaining Confeitaria Nacional’s reputation. Best chefs from France and Spain were brought to reinforce the efforts with their pastry, jam and liqueur-making abilities. Today, the pastries and sweets there are still made using these traditional 19th-Century recipes. The most famous one is their "bolo-rei" (King Cake) 🤴🏻🎂 : a ring-shaped fruit bread covered in crystallized fruit and nuts, introduced from France to the Confeitaria Nacional in 1850 and became so popular that every bakery in PORTUGAL makes these at Christmas as tradition. Not everyone likes the crystallize fruit, so the "Bolo Rainha" (Queen Cake) 👸🏻🎂 essentially the same cake except that fruits are replaced with nuts came later.

Their efforts were not in vain and soon conquer a variety of distinguished customers: Confeitaria Nacional became the official confectioner to the Casa Real (the Royal Household) 👑👑👑👑👑👑 in 1873 serving for the royal family and their guests until 1910, when the monarchy was overthrown. Whilst the PORTUGUESE may disagree politically, but not gastronomically, it was no surprise that Confeitaria Nacional awarded a diploma 🏆 from the President of the Republic in 1940 which allowed it to supply their products to the Presidency till present days.

This family patisserie with BIG history is one of my loved places in LISBOA 😻😻😻😻😻😻 ... Visiting Confeitaria Nacional is an Instagrammable experience. Let me take you inside this beautiful establishment with their marvelous treats and sugary delights displayed in a classic and elegant marble counter, decorative wood-work, topped by a mirrored ceiling. The staircase is probably one of the features leading us to the elegant tea room upstairs, a novelty for the time, opened in 1872 till today, where 🇵🇹 PORTUGUESE dishes are served too at lunch time ...

I would like to share my "sweet" 💜 experience of my last visit at this elegant tea room upstairs ... enjoying a famous traditional PORTUGUESE pastry with coffee ☕️🥐 ... and meeting a kind PORTUGUESE lady generously introducing its history with my limited Portuguese ... You may create your own "sweet" experience like me by ordering a box of sortidos (assorted cookies and treats you selected and weighted at the end) ... 😻😽😻😽😻😽

[ Livraria Bertrand - The Oldest Bookstore 📚📚📚 in the World on the Corner of CHIADO @ LISBOA ]

Founded in 1732 by two French 🇫🇷👨‍👦brothers, original store of Bertrand Bookstore 📚📚📚 in the CHIADO neighborhood of LISBOA was declared to be the oldest operating bookstore in the world by the Guinness 🏆🏆🏆 Book of World Records in 2011 ... 🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳

More than a bookstore, Bertrand has gained reputation as a privileged spot for “tertulia”, functioning almost as a book club 📚 where many great figures 👨🏻🧔🏻‍♂️🧔🏻of PORTUGUESE 🇵🇹 history were all habitués and used this space to talk literature and politics including renowned writers and poets such as Fernando Pessoa, Alexandre Herculano, Oliveira Martins, Eça de Queirós, Antero de Quental and Ramalho Ortigão. By the end of the 19th Century, CHIADO was where LISBOA’s elite 🎩🎓🎩🎓🎩🎓 used to gather, and through Bertrand passed liberals and conservatives, aristocrats and D. Pedro II himself.

Though most books are in Portuguese, there is a small English-language section, and English-language editions of the greatest works of Portuguese 🇵🇹 literature, including the classics by poet Fernando Pessoa and Nobel Prize author José Saramago. At the back is a literary-inspired café ☕️. When you buy a book, the staff will ask you if you want a stamp ©️ stating that it was bought at the world’s oldest bookstore ... 📚📖📚📖📚📖

[ Saturdays' Antique Book Fair - Feira de Alfarrabistas ]

One of the things Lisbonites like to do on Saturdays is go to CHIADO, visiting this open-air marketplace cross Rua da Anchieta next to Bertrand Bookstore offering a fascinating collection of second-hand and vintage books calmly exhibited on the booksellers’ vendors all day long. From 9am to 6pm, a bit of PORTUGUESE 🇵🇹 history can be found here, from comic books to recent releases, illustrated postcards and special editions. Covering various genres and eras, the calm and unpretentious atmosphere guarantees a few well-spent hours. Take the chance to buy a book to spend the next hour in a pavement café watching the time and people passing by at the best "human observatory" 👀 in CHIADO LISBOA ... 😽😸😽😸😽😸

I would like to share my "treasure hunting" 💎💎💎experience of my last visit to this open-air antique book fair ... An antique drawing 🖼 depicting a PORTUGUESE Royal Family 👑🤴🏻👸🏻👑 lived in CHIADO dated in 1900 ... Do arrange your trip to coincide with this open-air book fair to take advantage of the opportunity to discover some literary gems like me ... 😻😻😻😻😻😻

It is believed that the most extravagant privilege is "time" ⏰️⏳️ for those of us living in urban cities : it is highly recommended to have the amazing "chill-out" 😽😽😽😽😽😽 in this little corner of CHIADO, the most elegant neighborhood in the heart of LISBOA, with a much-deserved drink or a delicious bite to eat, a coffee or a brunch, a late afternoon aperitivo or a delicate w**e to finish an elegant evening, promised to have a great experience rich in flavour and history for sure! ... 😻😸😻😸😻😸

The dishes change from sunrise 🌄 to sunset 🌅, thanks to a subtle change of menu options during the day, different but equally tasty : a morning selection of especially coffees, juices, smoothies, pancakes, eggs benedict and freshly oven-baked panini's; following up with lunch dishes for a good brunch setting; ending the day with delightful small Italian plates accompanied with a great choice of spirits, cocktails and w**es ... 😋😋😋😋😋😋

Inspired by the "Vermuterias" originated from Vermouth distilling established during the 18th Century in the city of Turin, and the great Vermouth bars found in Italy, at night Caffè di Marzano turns into a charming vermuteria vinoteca, bringing back and revealing the old school vibes ! ... 🎼🎵🎶

I would like to share one of my favourite breakfast spots at LISBOA in this chill and tasty cafe at an affordable price ... 1 Banana Caramelized with Cinnamon Pancake 🥞 (€8.5) + 1 Latte ☕️ (€3.7) + 1 Book 📚 (Free) were ordered for my breakfast ... [ "FELIZ NATAL" 🥳🎅🏻🌲☃️❄️🥳 - Celebrating Like a Local - Christmas Traditions @ PORTUGAL 🇵🇹 ]

PORTUGAL 🇵🇹 is a Catholic 😇 country and that's why Christmas is such an important and most celebrated event for most of the PORTUGUESES! There are Christmas traditions passing down from generations to generations symbolizing communion, love, and family! ... 🥰🥰🥰 ... The PORTUGUESES celebrate Christmas on December 24 and 25, with Christmas Eve being the main celebration. On January 6, another celebration is quite common to bring about the end of the Christmas season. Let's check out some PORTUGUESE 🇵🇹 Christmas traditions and live this celebration like a local!

[ CONSODA & MISSA DO GALO on Christmas Eve in PORTUGAL ]
Unlike other countries, Christmas Eve on December 24 is the main day of celebration in PROTUGAL 🇵🇹. Families get together to enjoy dinner and celebration until late. For Christmas Eve Dinner (“Consoada”) in PORTUGAL, the star of the dining table is "bacalhau" 🐟 or salted cod where PORTUGUESE families tend to enjoy cod baked in the oven with potatoes, boiled eggs, and cabbage ... 🐟🥔🥚🥦😋

After dinner, there are many delicious desserts to enjoy. The table tends to be switched into a “dessert table” with many PORTUGUESE Christmas desserts 🤴🏻🎂🍮🥞🧆 on display, Port w**e 🍷 and coffee ☕️ while socializing, laughing, and playing games 😻😻😻😻😻😻

It’s still one of the most important traditions of this season for Catholics to attend a midnight mass called "Missa do Galo" 😇😇😇😇😇😇, to celebrate and mark the birth of Jesus Christ. They will later open presents or do so beforehand. Families will then spend more time together after opening presents 🎁 till midnight at Christmas Eve ... 😽😸😽😸😽😸

[ Traditional Portuguese 🇵🇹 Christmas Dishes & Desserts ]
🐟 Bacalhau : Salted cod is a PORTUGUESE staple for Christmas, particularly on Christmas Eve. The most traditional way to prepare it is to bake it in the oven and serve it with boiled potatoes, eggs, and Portuguese cabbage.
🐟 Bacalhau a Gomes de Sa : Salted cod is cooked with potatoes, onions, and layered with a hard-boiled egg, served on Christmas Eve.
🍖 Cabrito Assado : Oven-roasted lamb is traditionally served for lunch on Christmas Day, accompanied by roasted potatoes.
🍗 Peru Recheado: It also served on Christmas Day as a more affordable alternative, a turkey is stuffed with vegetables and other ingredients.
👕 Roupa Velha (Old Clothes): It is a way of fighting food waste, using the leftover cod from Christmas Eve and mixing it with potatoes, egg, and cabbage. It is then drizzled with quality olive oil and served for lunch on Christmas Day.
🤴🏻🎂 Bolo Rei (King Cake): A fluffy cake filled with fruits and nuts traditionally eaten on Christmas Day and Kings Day (January 6). It is present on every table at Christmas and symbolizes the gifts offered by the Magi to the Baby Jesus. The crust symbolizes the gold, the dried and crystallized fruits the myrrh and the aroma of the cake the incense. Each Cake has a dry fava bean inside. According to the tradition, the one who got the slice with the fava bean has to pay the Cake the following year.
🍮 Arroz Doce (Sweet Rice): This recipe is made with rice slow cooked in sweet milk and topped with cinnamon.
🍞 Rabanadas: Similar to French toast, the PORTUGUESE Rabanadas are fried bread coated with sugar and cinnamon.
🥖 Pão de Ló: This PORTUGUESE dessert is a humid cake with egg yolks. Some are made drier, and others are covered with sugar for an added flavor.
🧆 Sonhos (Dreams): They are deep-fried pastry balls covered with sugar and cinnamon

[ Dia dos Reis : End of Christmas on January 6 ]
The Christmas season only technically ends on January 6, on “Dia dos Reis” which translates to “Day of the Kings” 🤴🏻🤴🏻🤴🏻🤴🏻🤴🏻🤴🏻 ... This is the day when traditionally, the PORTUGUESE 🇵🇹 pack up their Christmas trees and decorations, saying goodbye to the season. This day is a Catholic celebration that says that three wise men, known as Reis Magos, visited baby Jesus on the night of January 5 after being guided by a star 🌟. The three kings 👑👑👑, Belchior, Baltazar, and Gaspar, gifted Jesus gold, incense, and myrrh. On this day, PORTUGUESE families get together to celebrate the end of Christmas. They enjoy Christmas dishes as they would on the Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. However, many PORTUGUESE families no longer celebrate this day ...

Last but not least, wishing you all "FELIZ NATAL E FELIZ ANO NOVO" ... 😻😽😻😽😻😽

[ The Most Emblematic 16-Century Church 💒 with Dazzling PORTUGUESE 🇵🇹 Azulejo Tile Panels 💙🤍 @ Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Assuncao CASCAIS ]

The Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Assunção (Our Lady of the Assumption), originally been built in the 16th Century engraved of CASCAIS in the work by Georg Braun and Frans Hogenburg, entitled “Civitates Orbis Terrarum“ dated 1572, is considered to be the most emblematic church of CASCAIS ... 💒

The Church is a notable example of a beautiful composition in the context of the national baroque having a longitudinal plan with a western façade. It comprises 3 bodies or sections, separated by stonework pilasters and two square-shaped lateral bell towers. The Gospel pulpit boasts 17th Century marble.

The carved gilt altarpiece of the Church forms an arch that provides the framework for a throne wherein there is an image of Our Lady of the Assumption being crowned by two angels 😇😇 from above. Beneath the throne lies a tabernacle, guarded by two angels 😇😇which, as tradition dictates, watch over it.

The most dazzling highlight 😻😻😻😻😻😻 of the Church are the walls of the nave covered with historic PORTUGUESE 🇵🇹 azulejo tile panels 💙🤍💙🤍💙🤍, mostly dating from 1720 where one of the nave's tiles takes as a reference an engraving by Caspar Luyken, published in 1712 in Nuremberg, with an ornamental composition of embankments in the lower register. They represent scenes from the life of Our Lady, with on the left side, the Birth of the Virgin, the Presentation of Our Lady in the Church and The Espousals of the Virgin. On the right side, the Annunciation and the Birth of Jesus follow. The last panel, Juízo Final, is more recent by Pereira Cão dated 1908.

Along the entirety of its nave, a set of important paintings of ancient art is displayed. These consist of four works by the Master of Lourinhã depicting the Virgin of the Annunciation with the Angel Gabriel, the Nativity and the Adoration of the Magi, dating from around 1520-1525. There are a further eight paintings by Josefa de Òbidos: The Holy Family (1672), a series of five paintings of St. Teresa of Jesus (or of Ávila) (1672): (i) St. Teresa before the Holy Trinity; (ii) The Virgin Mary and St. Joseph presenting St Teresa with a necklace; (iii) St. Teresa Mystical Woman; (iv) The Transverberation of St. Teresa; and (v) St. Teresa inspired by the Holy Spirit, to which are added the Baby Jesus Saviour of the World (1673), and the Vision of St. John of the Cross (c.1673), all of them commissioned for the Convento da Piedade ( now the CASCAIS Cultural Centre ), from where they were transferred after its closure. On the ceiling, there is a central medallion with a painting depicting the Assumption of Our Lady by the artist, José Malhoa, dated 1900.

Unfortunately, the 1755 earthquake caused an extensive damage to the Church, particularly in the area of the facade and the high choir, preventing its normal functioning. The cult then began to be celebrated in the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Nazaré - in the former Casa dos Falcões. At the same time, the Church of the Resurrection of Christ, located at the entrance to the Town, was also destroyed. A single parish was created encompassing and combining the two previously existing parishes - Parish of Nossa Senhora da Assunção and Ressurreição into one. The new restoration works on the Church continued until the 20th Century, with the most recent campaign dating back to the 2009-2010 biennium. On 15 May 2010, a sculpture of Pope John Paul II, designed by Alves André, was inaugurated in the Largo next to the church ... 😻😽😻😽😻😽

[ Fascinating Instagrammable Natural Coastal Landscape 🏞 @ Boca do Inferno CASCAIS ]

BOCA DO INFERNO, located on the Costa da Guia, west of CASCAIS in PORTUGAL 🇵🇹, is a popular landmark that can be reached by a 20-minutes walk 👣 from the historic town centre. Just follow the Avenue Rei Humberto II de Itália, past Cascais Marina, and continue along the coastline. This route also has a beautiful cycling path that leads to Guincho beach ... 😻😻😻😻😻😻

There is NO entrance fee to visit the BOCA DO INFERNO, and the Site opens all the time. There are pathways allowing you to climb down the cliff face and view the unique formation of the limestone rocks relentlessly washed away and eroded by the powerful Atlantic waves 🌊 and the violent winter storms 🌬 from both sides, leaving a chasm and sea arch, attributing the overdramatic name "BOCA DO INFERNO" ( literally the "Hell’s Mouth" 🧛🏻‍♂️👹👿 ).

Through continuous dissolution of carbonate in nature with erosion caused by the action of slightly acidic rainwater, this process weaken the limestone vein of the cliff featuring ancient caves with their wide-open mouths jutting into the sea in the form of archways and cavities along the coastline. Currently, the sea, with tremendous and tireless hit by giant waves risen in a white and deadly foam for tens of meters, continues to roar through the ancient arch into the base of the chasm, thus increases the spectacularity of BOCA DO INFERNO filmed by an Englishman Henry Short in 1896. With this distinguishing and unique characteristic, it is a fascinating place for leisure, where you can enjoy a marvel divine landscape and magnificent sunsets ... 🏞🌅🏞🌅🏞🌅

Next to the viewing platform, you will find an excellent seafood restaurant called Mar do Inferno, cafeteria and the Mercadinho selling local handmade products. The stalls open every day, and even if you don't buy anything, they make for a good stroll after taking a peek at the BOCA DO INFERNO ... 😽😽😽😽😽😽

[ Incredible Cultural & Heritage CatWalk 😸😽😻around the Museum Quarter @ CASCAIS ]

Proving that it is not just for fun in the sunny beach 😎🌞🏖 days illustrated the Town whatever the season, CASCAIS but also has a cluster of museums which labeled “Museum Quarter (Bairro dos Museus)” 🏛🏛🏛🏛🏛🏛. The Town also provides a incredible and fruitful year-round cultural and heritage walk for all tastes. Let me share some of the highlights forming part of the “Museum Quarter” :-

[ 🏰 Condes de Castro Guimaraes Museum ]
Av. Rei Umberto II de Italia Parque Marecha Carmona, 2750-319 CASCAIS | Portugal
Located in the beautiful Marechal Carmona Park, the Counts of Castro Guimarães Museum was built in the early 20th Century and is one of CASCAIS oldest museums, operating in the former São Sebastião Tower, a remarkable piece of stylistic mish-mash architecture with neo gothic and neo renaissance influences which is the Town’s "must-see" built by aristocrat Jorge O’Neill (who was also behind the construction of the House of Santa Maria and the Museum of Portuguese Music building). The beautiful fairytale castle was sold in 1910 to the Castro Guimarães counts, who lived there until 1927; this is the era portrayed in a trip to the Museum. There is a music room with an incredible pipe organ; a dining room filled with porcelain and silverware; the Count’s library with a valuable Chronicle of King D. Afonso Henriques by historian Duarte Galvão, written in 1505; the personal effects of the countess; the counts’ room; and their armoires, which had a room of their own.

[ 🗼 Farol Museu de Santa Marta ]
Av. Rei Humberto II de Italia, 2750-800 CASCAIS | Portugal
A lighthouse from 1868, which is originally part of the Santa Marta Fort complex, is now converted into a Museum exhibiting the building’s history and technological advancements over the years, the daily life and routine of the former lighthouse keepers as well as displaying the tools and equipment that make lighthouses work. It also presents the history of every lighthouse found down the PORTUGUESE coast, while from the top there is a bird-view of CASCAIS and the Atlantic.

[ 🏠 Casa de Santa Maria ]
Praceta Farol, 2750-642 CASCAIS | Portugal
Santa Marta Cove, right next to the CASCAIS Marina, is one of the most romantic spots in Town. There lies, since the early 1900s, a House that is just as romantic. Designed by a leading early 20th-Century architect Raul Lino - who did a lot of work in CASCAIS - it is known as the House of Santa Maria, and it is probably one of CASCAIS’s most photographed buildings. A private residence for exactly a century, it changed hands from one owner to the next until it was acquired by the CASCAIS City Hall, who decided to open it to the public. Walking around the house you will find several tile panels - the most significant of which are by António de Oliveira Bernardes (1662-1732), of the National Baroque period - two amazing balconies with beanbag chairs where you can sit and enjoy the view, a beautifully-tiled staircase, a chapel, a kitchen and a salon - the old furniture is long gone, but the beauty remains.

[ A Revitalized Cidadela Art Hub 🏰🎭🖼🎨🕶@ CASCAIS ]

Located above the marina, the Citadel de CASCAIS is a set of fortifications built between the 15th- and 17th-Centuries to defend the CASCAIS coastline and River Tagus estuary and to protect against attacks on the capital of Portugal, LISBOA 🇵🇹. The Citadel incorporates three separate sections namely (i) the Torre of Santo António de CASCAIS; (ii) the Fortress of Our Lady of Light (Fortalexa Nossa Senhora da Luz de CASCAIS); and (iii) the Former Royal Palace Area. This Fortified Complex sets as a fine example of military architecture in PORTUGAL ... 😻😻😻😻😻😻

The first construction of the Citadel on the site was between 1410 and 1415. Improvements to this were deemed necessary as the CASCAIS Bay was constantly threatened by the English. In 1488, a medieval-style tower at the tip of the Point of Salmodo, to the southwest of the Bay, was begun under the orders of King John II of PORTUGAL. The Citadel, known as the Torre de Santo António de Cascais, was designed to share, with artillery ships and two other fortresses, which are the Belém Tower and the Fort of São Sebastião de Caparica approximately opposite each other on the River Tagus serving resistance to possible military attack to LISBOA.

In 1580, when PORTUGAL’s King Sebastião died with no heir, Spanish troops invaded CASCAIS in an attempt to reach LISBOA and annex PORTUGAL. They beheaded four PORTGUESE soldiers and hung them from the Citadel, to terrorize the local population and prevent resistance. Under the Spanish King Philip II, a great defensive program was devised to provide further reinforcements and to protect the Tejo Estuary and the small defensive position was greatly extended to include a garrison, defensive walls and the Fortalexa Nossa Sehora da Luz, Mary of the Light Stronghold. Although PORTUGAL did not become Spain, the two nations did end up sharing the same crown, creating the Iberian Union. It lasted for 60 years - in 1640 Portugal crowned a new king and restored its status as a sovereign Iberian nation.

The construction of the Nossa Senhora da Luz de Cascais was ordered by Philip I to provide further reinforcements. It began in 1594, designed by an Italian Captain Fratino, following an unusual triangular design that took advantage of the existing Torre de Santo António de CASCAIS, which is incorporated as one of three bastions built into the Citadel. The Fortress had an interior courtyard that allowed communication between the three bastions and access to the batteries, barracks and cisterns. Reinforcement and enlargement of the Citadel was subsequently carried out around 1648, under the control of King John IV. The Citadel could not escape from the destruction of the 1755 earthquake in LISBOA and the resulting tsunami where the structure suffered severe and considerable damages.

In the 19th-Century, King Luís I of PORTUGAL ordered to adopt of the Citadel into a lavish place of rest and retreat for the Royal Family and Nobility as the "Royal Retreat Palace" 🏰🤴🏻👸🏻👑. Until the regicide of King Carlos I in 1908, the Royal Family often spent its warmer September and October days in CASCAIS leading to the growth of CASCAIS as an important location for affluent people from LISBOA to spend the summer. Switched on in September 1878, the Citadel was equipped with the first electric lights in PORTUGAL. Through a Decree in 1977, the Citadel was classified as "Property of Public Interest". Since then, it has been restored and incorporated into the surrounding areas with modern designs, providing an impressive backdrop for the new CASCAIS Marina ⛵️⚓️. The Fortified Complex has been revitalized as a Hotel integrated with a Palace (now opened to the public since 2011 as museum with an admission fee of €4 offering guided tours and temporary exhibitions, but is still sometimes used by the President of the Republic in present days) and galleries which collectively given the place as a “Cidadela Art Hub" ... 🎭🖼🎨 ... 😻😻😻😻😻😻

[ Historic PORTUGUESE Royal Summer Resort 🇵🇹🤴🏻👸🏻🏖🌞 @ CASCAIS ]

CASCAIS and its spectacular coastline are a "must-see" destination to PORTUGAL 🇵🇹. Flanked on two sides by the Atlantic Ocean, the region is located just 25 km from LISBOA and its international airport, stretching west in a rectangle from Carcavelos to Guincho Beach 🏖🌞🏖🌞🏖🌞. Nearby stands the imposing Cabo da Roca, mainland Europe’s most westerly point.

With its mild year-round climate, CASCAIS is the “PORTUGUESE Riviera” from a former traditional fishing village to a cosmopolitan resort when historically the PORTUGUESE King 🇵🇹🤴🏻 made it his summer retreat in the late 1800s. The nobility soon followed him, and, as a result, elegant 19th-Century mansions now line the cobbled pedestrian streets of the historic center and the seafront.

The beaches of CASCAIS are gorgeous 😻😻😻😻😻, surrounding the town are the beautiful beaches of the PORTUGESE Riviera, offering a surprising variety of landscapes and attractions, combining a wide range of possibilities in one very unique destination, while to the north is the wild and untamed Serra de Sintra coastline, with its vast surfing beaches, and dramatic and stunning natural scenery where scenic costal walk is highly recommended ! ... 😽😽😽😽😽😽

During World War II, when PORTUGAL remained neutral, European monarchs sought exile on the LISBOA coast, settling in CASCAIS and neighboring Estoril, further making the area rich and glamorous.

Found within the cobbled streets of the historic centre are splendid and lavish 19th-Century villas 🏘, an imposing restored fort 🏰 Cidadela de CASCAIS containing an upmarket artisan hub, fascinating historic museums, exclusive marina complex, along with lively bars and restaurants which give CASCAIS its buzzing holiday atmosphere. CASCAIS boats so many interesting sights and attractions, that it is regarded as one of the best day trips, just a short train ride from the centre of vibrant LISBOA ... Do plan a day trip or even a long vacation while visiting PORTUGAL next time ... 😻😽😻😽😻😽

[ A Perfect Illustration of The Evolution of Vehicles from Ancient Horse-drawn Carriages 🎠🛺🎠🛺🎠🛺 to Modern Motor Cars 🚙🛻🚕🚓🏍🚘 @ Museu Nacional dos Coches BELEM ]

Museu Nacional dos Coches ( The National Coach Museum ), is one of LISBOA's most visited museums located at Afonso de Albuquerque Square of BELEM, houses one of the most finest, unique and exceptional collections of ancient ceremonial and astonished ornate horse-drawn carriages 🎠🛺🎠🛺🎠🛺 made in Italy, Portugal, France, Spain, Austria and England ... these fairytale magnificent vehicles transported European royalty and nobility throughout the 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th Centuries in the world including coaches, berlins, sedan chairs and carriages, etc. ... all of them are decorated in a rich and profuse style, making this a highly recommended attraction to visit ... 😸😽😺😽😸😽

[ An Extension of the Coach Museum ]
Museu Nacional dos Coches was formerly housed in the Royal Riding Arena of BELEM, the former home of the 🇵🇹 PORTUGUESE School of Equestrian Art, known as the Picadeiro Real, a part of the larger BELEM Palace complex, formerly a Royal Palace, which is now the official residence of the President of PORTUGAL 🇵🇹, on the 23rd of May 1905 created by 👸🏻 Queen D. Amélia of Orleães and Bragança ( the Princess of France married to King Carlos I of PORTUGAL ) as a way to preserve this wonderful and important collection of vehicles belonging to the Royal House of PORTUGAL 🇵🇹 while most royal carriages were destroyed over time throughout Europe especially in Paris after the French Revolution.

The Royal Horse Riding Arena was built after 1787, following the Neoclassical design of Italian architect Giacomo Azzolini. Several PORTUGUESE artists decorated the interior of the Arena with paintings and azulejo tile panels. The inner arena is 50 m long and 17 m wide, and was used for training horses and for horse riding exhibitions and games, which could be watched from its balconies by the 🇵🇹 PORTUGUESE Royal family ... 🤴🏻👸🏻🤴🏻👸🏻🤴🏻👸🏻

To commemorate its 110th Anniversary 🥳, the Museum was extended to a brand new modern building designed by the Pritzker-prized Brazilian Architect 👷🏻🏗🏛 Paulo Mendes da Rocha inaugurated on the 23rd of May 2015.

The Museu Nacional dos Coches features some extremely ostentatious and noteworthy horse-drawn vehicles, among its rarest items especially those that belonged to 🤴🏻 King Philip II of PORTUGAL (Philip III of Spain, 1581–1598) to come from Spain to Portugal in 1619. They are the oldest in the collection ... but the oldest example dates back to the late 1500s and is one of only two in the world that still survive from that time ( the other one is in Moscow ).

There are also several Baroque Italian 18th-Century carriages decorated with paintings and exuberant gilt woodwork, the most impressive of these being a ceremonial coach given by ✝️ Pope Clement XI to King João V of PORTUGAL in 1715, and the three 🎠🛺🛺🛺 coaches of the PORTUGUESE Ambassador to Pope Clement XI, built in Rome in 1716. Last but not least, a more recent example from the 1800s last used by England’s 👸🏻 Queen Elizabeth II on a state visit is also the highlight of the Museum.

In addition to the coaches, the Museum features a collection of accessories and pieces used in the art of horse riding. It also allows visitors to see the technical and artistic evolution of vehicles before the modern motor car.

It is recommended to visit both old and new museums with a combined ticket at €10 ( or individual ticket €8/€5 ) starting in the Royal Riding Arena and then move on to the modern complex ... Though the facades of the museums may not appeal to most of us, you will find yourself surprised and rewarded with one of this finest museums in LISBON ... Don't miss out while visiting LISBOA next time ! ... 😻😻😻😻😻😻
