▪️WEIRD NIGHTMARE
Hoopla
(Loser Edition on Transparent Orange Vinyl)

Every band worth its salt has a member who worked in a record store. In METZ, the fearless noise rock trio who released five full-length albums on Sub Pop between 2012 and 2024, it was singer and guitarist Alex Edkins. Slinging indie rock and hardcore records in his hometown record store while attending university, Edkins became an ardent student of rock ‘n’ roll from the psychedelic 1960s to the DIY 1990s and beyond. Hoopla, the catchy, melodic second LP from Edkins’s solo project Weird Nightmare, mixes and matches these influences in fun and exhilarating combinations, displaying his sophisticated musical mind. Bursting to life with hooks and earworms, Hoopla is that one tape that never gets ejected from the car stereo, but plays on repeat, soundtracking the summer. New and nostalgic at the same time, Hoopla will perk up your ears.

Weird Nightmare’s self-produced, and decidedly lo-fi, self-titled debut was recorded at home during the pandemic and released by Sub Pop in 2022. Weird Nightmare displayed Edkins’s indie rock sensibility, with a penchant for undeniable hooks and massive sing-along choruses.

▪️MØL
Dreamcrush
(Limited Edition on Coke Bottle Green / Black Yolk Vinyl)

Having dreams can sustain you - give you something to believe in - but the weight of expectation, the burden of reality can also mean that such dreams can become oppressive; they can just as easily shatter you. Denmark’s MØL explore the dichotomy of such dreams on their latest album, Dreamcrush, via Nuclear Blast. Informed by a series of disparate life events, the eleven tracks that make up the album are a tapestry of emotions, stitched together with threads of experiences that criss-cross over time and place.

MØL offer the opportunity to worship at whatever psychic temple resonates the most. Drawing influence from the likes of My Bloody Valentine, Cocteau Twins and The Smashing Pumpkins, MØL pull a gossamer veil over their sharpest, most jagged edges whilst channeling big alt-rock hooks. Steeping even their most aggressive moment in melody creates an emotional dynamic that is the post-rock foundation for their most explosive sonic expressions to date. In amongst clouds of unfathomable loss and grief, Dreamcrush offers rays of almost unbearable hope - the option to keep on dreaming despite ourselves.

NEW ARRIVAL / STAFF PICK _________
▪️HAMMOK
When Does This Place Become Our Scene
(Limited Edition on Red Vinyl)

On Hammok’s new album When Does This Place Become Our Scene, the Oslo trio’s sophomore outing and first release for Sargent House, their noise-rock, hardcore, and metal foundations expand into broader, more dynamic territory. Industrial textures, hip-hop-informed rhythms, synth-led passages, and progressive structures surface alongside classic punk urgency, revealing a band equally invested in abrasion and atmosphere.

Produced by vocalist and guitarist Tobias Osland, the songs arrived in inspired bursts, even as the recording process proved painstaking. Tasked with refining and expanding their sound, Hammok tweaked and explored each track until it held all their competing impulses at once: music that feels volatile and immediate yet dense with hooks and layered detail. True to its title, When Does This Place Become Our Scene examines hardcore’s lineage and social politics while widening its focus to questions of belonging in an era shaped by the internet and hyperconnection. Balancing underground intensity with pop instinct, they arrived at an album equal parts scream-along cathartic and nod-along infectious.

▪️SPACE AFRIKA
Quiet Storm
(Limited Edition on Blue Ripple Vinyl)

Space Afrika, the Manchester/Berlin-based duo of Joshua Tarelle Reid and Joshua Inyang, make raw, intensely detailed, visceral music with shades of ambient, trip-hop, techno, and modern classical, drawing spacious urban dubscapes from the contours of their city.

'Quiet Storm', the duo's highly anticipated follow-up to their 2021 LP on Dais Records, expands on its predecessor’s sound and scale in every direction as a sprawling, collaborative vision shaped with profound patience and intention. The leap, both technical and emotional, outlines the duo’s development — two polymath producers, composers, performers, and visual artists who’ve met expectations with mastery, embedding their own coming-of-age story within a moving suite of cathartic abstraction.

Songs allude to spirituality and the human condition, the tension between boldness and softness, ambition and the inner demons that persist. Contributors include Axelle Fanyo, Alto Aria, Deuén, Klein, RXKNephew, Tony Njoku, Kiala Ogawa, and Kelly Moran.

▪️JULIA JACKLIN
The Gem
(Limited Edition on Turquoise Vinyl)

The fourth studio album from Julia Jacklin, The Gem, will be released on 25 September and marks the Australian musician’s debut release on 4AD.

The Gem was produced by Jacklin and Robert Muinos and recorded entirely in Melbourne. First single "Get Away From Me (I Think I’ll Love You Soon)’"is a bold and fun nod to eighties jangle rock and to the Melbourne sound she fell in love with.

“I want to love and be loved, but I also want to be free. The tension between those two things has been the central question of my life,” says Jacklin. It’s also the theme that underpins The Gem.

▪️GILLA BAND
Pugnello
(Limited Edition on Red/Black Marble Vinyl)

Gilla Band have released today their brand new album ‘Pugnello’ on Rough Trade Records. The album was recorded from 2022 - 2026 across three studios, Hellfire, Yellow Door Music Studio, & Sonic Studios in Dublin, the album was produced by Gilla Band & it was recorded and mixed by Daniel Fox.

Gilla Band never know where they’re going next. For over ten years now, the Dublin quartet (vocalist Dara Kiely, guitarist Alan Duggan Borges, bassist Daniel Fox, and drummer Adam Faulkner) have been redefining what you could loosely call “rock music” in the 21st century, influencing a wide swath of similarly forward-thinking guitar acts along the way. Across 2015’s Holding Hands With Jamie, 2019’s The Talkies, and 2022’s Most Normal, the band perfected a vision that wasn’t quite post-punk, wasn’t quite noise-rock, wasn’t quite anything besides an idiosyncratic, ground-breaking hybrid that could only come from the four of them.

In the four years since Most Normal, each member embarked on other artistic endeavors. Kiely fostered a newfound love of painting, Faulkner played drums for Lankum on the road, Fox became an increasingly in-demand producer guiding ascendant acts like Sprints, Lambrini Girls, and Mandy, Indiana, while Duggan Borges launched his solo project the Null Club with collaborations featuring Mandy, Indiana’s Valentine Caulfield, the Horrors’ Faris Badwan, Miss Grit, and Brooklyn MC Elucid. All their extracurricular activity existed in parallel with the exploratory route towards Pugnello, but also informed the band as they reconvened to crystallize the album’s vision.

▪️TWISTED TEENS
Florida Water Blues (Loser Edition on Sky Blue Vinyl)

Twisted Teens is a rockin' roll band from New Orleans. The Kinks of living in a school bus with no wheels on it. The Rolling Stones of Jungian anarchism. The Buzzcocks of the poisoned bogs of south Louisiana. Punk inflected country music, or country inflected punk music idk. Memetic warfare via earworms (it's extremely catchy.) Outperforms all other bands in every metric, drinks every night but still makes it to the gym. Draws no contrast between the familiar and unfamiliar.

NEW ARRIVAL ________________
▪️THE COATHANGERS
Nosebleed Weekend "10th Anniversary"
(Limited Edition of 1000 on Translucent Rose Vinyl)

When The Coathangers started up in 2006, their aspirations were humble. “I think all bands in their early twenties start for fun,” says guitarist/vocalist Julia Kugel when talking about their early years of cheeky no-wave and irreverent garage rock. But Julia and her bandmates Meredith Franco (bass/vocals) and Stephanie Luke (drums/vocals) were serious about their craft, and that combination of modest outside expectations and absolute dedication to their music made for exhilarating live shows and contagious records.

Ten years later, The Coathangers are still going strong, and while their palette has expanded over the years to touch upon hip-shakin’ classic rock, soulful country ballads, and golden oldies pop, their primary attack strategy still relies heavily on the jagged hooks and boisterous choruses of their formative years. Their fifth album Nosebleed Weekend retains all the devil-may-care magnetism and serrated instrumentation of their debut, but it flourishes with a decade’s worth of songwriting discipline and chemistry.
