A useful article from Fibonacci Guitars, one of our customers, explaining why carved archtop guitars involve a higher level of cost and technical work.
For a carved archtop, material selection is critical. Density, stiffness, grain orientation, seasoning and stability all influence how the plates can be carved, graduated and finally voiced.
This is why the relationship between the luthier and the tonewood supplier matters. A consistent collaboration helps the supplier better understand the maker’s requirements and helps the luthier work with material that has been selected for the specific demands of archtop construction.
When the excess wood is removed to create the carved and hollowed body of an archtop guitar, the real quality and behaviour of the material become much clearer. Careful selection at the source can reduce surprises at the bench and support a more predictable building process.
