Not every spruce top should become an archtop.

For carved archtop guitars, the material has to offer more than a nice appearance: straight and close grain, good stiffness, quarter-sawn orientation, and enough thickness for serious carving.

We have just added a new batch of European spruce archtop tops to the online store.

A detailed review of a guitar built by Dan Kellaway using a Carpathian spruce top from our stock.

The top and the bracewood was sent to Australia for the build and has now returned to Europe. Interesting to see how European spruce continues to be used by luthiers worldwide in very different construction approaches.

No carbon fiber. No balsa reinforcements. Just traditional materials combined with precise woodworking and modern design solutions.

One detail is the neck adjustment system, which allows the action to be adjusted using a small hex key without major intervention on the instrument.

Known as sycamore maple, this is the traditional wood used for the back, ribs, and necks of violins, violas, cellos, and double basses since the beginnings of violin making.

Not chosen by accident.
Its combination of strength, workability, stability, acoustic response, and figure made it the standard in Cremona centuries ago and it still is today.

The flame may catch the eye first, but the structure is what kept generations of makers loyal to it.

European curly maple back and sides with a European spruce top is not a decorative choice.
In archtop history, it became a structural standard where violin making principles intersected with jazz guitar design.

Benedetto Manhattan and Benedetto La Venezia define the modern benchmark: carved European spruce, flamed European maple, tuned plates, and controlled acoustic balance.

Höfner Chancellor represents the German factory approach: solid spruce, solid European maple, and a projection-driven design.

The underlying logic remains consistent:
spruce for speed, stiffness, and response;
maple for structure, focus, and reflective clarity.

Famous archtops are rarely defined by wood alone.
However, this pairing remains one of the clearest markers of the serious carved archtop tradition.

Materials for this combination are available on our website.

This is where every instrument begins: with the right wood.
We’re glad he took the time to choose it personally from our stock, the rest is craftsmanship.

A cello neck leaves very little margin for error.
If it shifts later, everything shifts with it.

That is why the wood must have straight, tight grain and be properly quartersawn.
Selection prioritizes stability and consistency; figure is secondary.

Well-seasoned, predictable under the tool, and suited for precise work.

Now available in the online store.
