Meet Vartan Sirmakes, The Armenian Co-Founder Of The World-Renowned Luxury Watch Brand Franck Muller 🇦🇲

Vartan Sirmakes is the Armenian entrepreneur who co-founded Franck Muller, one of the most celebrated names in luxury Swiss watchmaking. Born in 1956 to an Armenian family in Constantinople, he later settled in Switzerland, where he built a career at the intersection of precision, design, and global luxury, becoming one of the most influential Armenian figures in the modern watch industry.
Sirmakes arrived in Geneva at 18 and trained as a jewel-setter, soon opening his own workshop and earning the trust of major houses such as Cartier and Ebel. In 1991, he partnered with the master watchmaker Franck Muller to launch the brand that would carry Muller's name, with Sirmakes serving as the business and strategic force behind it. Together they transformed an independent venture into one of the most recognizable names in high-end horology, known for bold designs, technical innovation, and complex mechanical movements.
Building A Global Luxury Powerhouse
As the strategic mind behind the brand, Sirmakes played a key role in scaling Franck Muller from a young workshop into a global luxury group, with boutiques and collectors across Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and the United States. Today the group operates multiple production sites across Switzerland and oversees a family of watch brands.
Franck Muller watches became synonymous with creativity and craftsmanship, particularly through signature complications such as tourbillons, perpetual calendars, and uniquely shaped cases that challenged traditional watch design.
A Builder Who Invested In The Homeland
Sirmakes never treated his global success as something separate from his Armenian identity. He became a major investor in Armenia's economy, including its banking sector, and he carried that commitment into Artsakh, financing development projects there at a time when few international businesspeople were willing to. He also served as Armenia's Honorary Consul in Marseille, lending his name and standing to his nation's interests abroad.
That commitment came at a cost. Azerbaijan moved to criminalize his work in Artsakh, opening a case against him and pushing for his name to be placed on an Interpol wanted list, branding his investment in Armenian land as "illegal economic activity." The charge had nothing to do with law. It was the response of a state that saw a successful Armenian building in Artsakh and treated that choice as a threat.
Armenian Success On A Global Stage
Vartan Sirmakes' story reflects the global reach of Armenian entrepreneurship, blending heritage, discipline, and vision into an international success that placed an Armenian-led company at the pinnacle of Swiss luxury watchmaking. That he was pursued for investing in his own homeland is not a mark against him. It is a measure of how much that work mattered.
Sirmakes remains a symbol of Armenian excellence in global business, proof that Armenian founders continue to shape industries, and stand by their nation, far beyond their borders.
