The Venice Clock: A Masterpiece in the Heart of St Mark's Square

Few clocks in the world are as closely connected with the identity of a city as the Venice Clock in St Mark's Square. Known in Italian as the Torre dell'Orologio, or Clock Tower, this extraordinary monument has stood above the entrance to the Merceria for more than five centuries.

Located in the heart of Venice, Italy, the clock combines Renaissance architecture, astronomy, sculpture and mechanical engineering in a single spectacular monument. Its large blue-and-gold dial displays the hours, zodiac signs, months, days and phases of the Moon, while two monumental bronze figures known as the Moors strike the bell at the top of the tower.

The clock and tower were inaugurated on February 1, 1499, during the height of the Venetian Republic. More than 500 years later, the Venice Clock remains one of the most recognizable sights in St Mark's Square.

Antique clocks are more than beautiful decorative objects. They are pieces of mechanical history, craftsmanship, and design that

Behind every finely made longcase, mantel, or wall clock was a skilled woodworker. In many periods, the person who made the clock movement was not the same person who made its case. The manufacture of wooden clock cases developed into a specialized trade, involving cabinetmakers, joiners, carvers, veneer specialists, and craftsmen who became known specifically as clock-case makers.

When we look at an antique wooden clock, our attention naturally goes to the dial, the hands, the pendulum, or the movement hidden inside. Yet the wooden case is often just as important to the identity and history of the clock. Behind every finely made longcase, mantel, or wall clock was a skilled w...
