The White Volcanoes of Harrat Khaybar, north of Al-Madinah

The volcanic fi eld of Harrat Khaybar north of Al-Madi-nah, Saudi Arabia contains rare examples of white volcanoes comprised mainly of the felsic rock comendite. The obsidian that occurs in association with the white comendite was exploited and worked by Neolithic inhabitants of the area. The white volcanoes are surrounded by more recent black basaltic lava fi elds that follow the pre-existing topography and display both aa and pa-hoehoe fl ow structures. Although situated only 60 km from a busy motorway, the volcanic area is remote and all necessary safety precautions must be taken in order to visit the volcanoes.ar

The picture above shows the Hajar al-Aswad (The Black Stone), which is set in the eastern corner of the Ka’bah. Tawaf begins and ends facing this sacred stone. Throughout the ages, countless people including many of the Prophets (upon them be peace), the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) himself, the Sahabah (may Allah be pleased with them), pious personalities and millions of Muslims who have performed Hajj and Umrah have placed their blessed lips on it.

As the cultural center holds incredible vision, it is also located in a poetic landmark, at the Kingdom’s first commercial oil well, the Prosperity Well. As the center pays tribute to the wealth brought forth by the discovery of oil, it is now representing a different source of energy: human energy.

Ithra is a project pioneering in innovation, culture, and knowledge founded by Saudi Aramco. The ambitious center began work on May 20, 2008. The opening ceremony celebration was attended by His Majesty the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud, may he rest in peace, who laid the cornerstone of the project. Ithra opened its doors to the public in 2018.

​The approval of the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO to adopt the historic Jeddah within the World Heritage List comes due to the fact that the position of Jeddah city dates back to the pre-Islamic era as an important place across different civilizations. It saw, at the beginning of the Islamic era, a major turning point when it was taken by Caliph Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) as the port of the Holy City Makkah Al Mukarramah in the year 26 AH / 647 AD, and from that time on, the city of Jeddah gained its historic dimension as one of the most important cities along the Red Sea coast and Gateway of the Two Holy Mosques.​
