In 2017, a friend showed Betty a photo from a rooftop tent trip through North Africa.
That was enough.
She bought one without ever seeing it in real life — back when almost no Swedes even knew rooftop tents existed. The first trip was to Gotland. They came home with one question stuck in their heads:
”Why doesn’t everyone have one of these?”🏕️
Two years later they left Stockholm, their stable jobs, and their old life — and moved to Åre to be closer to the mountains, the outdoors, and the way they actually wanted to live. Taktältarna was born in 2020.
A rooftop tent is exactly what it sounds like. It lives on the roof of your car. You drive somewhere worth going, unfold it in a few minutes, and sleep up off the ground — with a mattress, a view, and none of the faff of a regular campsite. No booking. No check-in. No tent pegs in wet ground at 10pm.
Just your car, a good spot, and the morning light. 🌄
They make tents they actually use themselves. Testing them in all seasons, travelling with their kids and their dog, building everything around real trips — not photoshoots. 🐾
The goal has always been simple: get more people out there. Into nature. Waking up somewhere that reminds them why they love being outside.
If you’re new here — welcome. We’re really glad you found us. 👋
If you already have a rooftop tent: you know. 🤘
