《荷风向北》｜Lotus, Northward

50 × 70 cm｜Ink & Colour on Paper

The lotus has long been a symbol of purity, elegance and inner strength in Eastern art. For me, it has gradually become an image that connects my past with my present.

At the heart of this painting are a blooming pink lotus, a lotus bud, and a large, expressive leaf, growing upward from the centre of the composition. I combine the freedom and energy of expressive Chinese ink painting with the delicacy and precision of Gongbi painting. The varying tones of ink meet soft, subtle colours, creating a balance between freedom and structure.

This way of painting is also connected to my more than twenty years of experience in automotive design. Design taught me to see composition, proportion, space, depth, and visual rhythm in a very intuitive way. I naturally bring this sense of space and structure into my traditional Chinese painting.

In the upper right corner, the distant landscape is Gothenburg, the city where I now live. The coastline of Saltholmen, distant houses, a small diving jetty, and the mountains and sea beyond gradually dissolve into the soft, quiet landscape.

I love this sense of distance.

The lotus comes from the East. The coastline belongs to the North. And the space between them is where I live and create today.

What I am exploring is not simply how traditional Chinese ink painting can take root in the Nordic landscape, but what new possibilities can emerge when Chinese brushwork meets the light, air and spaciousness of the North.

A quiet and gentle dialogue between Eastern aesthetics and a Nordic perspective.

Let the lotus grow from the East, and journey northward.

Today’s painting is not finished yet, but I’m already getting happier and happier as I paint. 😁

I’m becoming more and more certain that this is something I truly love and feel passionate about.

I love the boldness, freedom and strength of Chinese freehand ink painting, but I also love the delicacy and precision of Gongbi, the traditional Chinese fine-line painting style.

As I was painting today, I realised that I’m slowly finding my own way of expressing myself — combining freehand and fine-line techniques, while also bringing more than twenty years of experience in automotive design and industrial product rendering into my contemporary Chinese painting.

The sense of line, strength, speed, structure, perspective, light, and space that I developed over all those years is still within me. Through a brush, these experiences are now flowing together and finding a new form.

A line can have speed.
A lotus leaf can have strength and rhythm.

And with my long experience in Western drawing, colour and the sense of space from oil painting, I increasingly want to take traditional Chinese painting as my foundation, while bringing together artistic languages from both East and West.

Slowly, I hope to discover my own way of expressing contemporary Chinese painting.

The painting is not finished yet, but I’m already so happy. 😊

Perhaps what truly makes me happy is not simply finishing a painting, but discovering, through the process of painting, that my past and present selves are gradually coming together — creating the person and artist I will become tomorrow.

From Rice Paper to a New Home

From the first brushstroke, to the finished artwork arriving at its new home, and finally helping to hang it on the wall — my paintings have completed their own little journey. ❤️

So happy to see these two paintings now living in such a beautiful seaside home. And a special thank you to my husband for helping me drill the holes while I vacuumed up every bit of dust. 😊

Seeing my paintings become part of someone else’s home makes me truly happy. Thank you for loving my art and for giving these two paintings a new home. ❤️

Today, while working on a commissioned painting, I suddenly found myself feeling a little nostalgic.

There are many straight lines in the architecture at the bottom of this Chinese ink painting, so today I reached for an old and very familiar friend — my ruler.

I started painting Chinese ink at the age of 10. When I was 16, I decided to pursue art, and when I took my first entrance exam for Tianjin Art School, my private art teacher personally made this ruler for me.

I never imagined that so many years later, after travelling from China to Sweden, I would still be carrying it with me.
(I hope my teacher sees this! 😁 Thank you! 🙏😁)

Later, I went to art college, became a design teacher, worked as an industrial designer, and created many architectural design renderings. I painted oils and sketches, then went to Sweden to study automotive design, and eventually became an automotive designer.

For so many years, I worked with computers, design concepts and creative ideas. Looking back now, it feels like none of those experiences ever really disappeared. Instead, they have slowly come together and found their way into this contemporary Chinese ink painting.

Sometimes I feel that life is truly amazing.

Every step we take, and everything we learn along the way, leaves a trace. We may not know at the time when it will become useful, but one day, it can return to us in the most natural and unexpected way.

Today, I really enjoyed the creative process — bringing together years of design, painting and life experience, and slowly letting them become part of one artwork.

Every step counts.
Every footprint has meaning.

Places Within

No.5 – Northern Waters

Inspired by the Nordic coastline, Northern Waters captures the quiet strength and untamed spirit of northern nature.

A Northern Pike( Gädda), one of Scandinavia's most iconic freshwater predators, moves powerfully through the water while two tiny sailing boats drift almost unnoticed on the distant horizon. The dramatic contrast in scale creates a dialogue between human presence and the vastness of the Nordic landscape.

Rather than portraying a specific location, the painting expresses a state of mind — one shaped by stillness, freedom and deep respect for nature. The generous empty space, expressive ink brushwork and subtle washes invite viewers to slow down and experience the calm beneath the surface.

As part of the Places Within series, Northern Waters explores how landscapes become inner places, carrying memory, identity and a profound sense of belonging.

鱼不会知道，
眼前的是一顿美餐，
还是一个陷阱。

人生也是如此。

很多重要的选择，
都发生在一个极短的瞬间。

机会与风险，
诱惑与成长，
常常披着同一种外表。

画中的哥德堡鱼教堂，见证了这座城市数百年的渔业历史，也见证了无数人与海洋之间的关系。

而这条鲈鱼（European Perch），瑞典Abborre, 停留在鱼饵前，没有前进，也没有后退。

这一刻，没有答案。

真正的故事，
发生在下一秒。

我希望观众停留在这一刻，
重新思考属于自己的选择。

A Moment Before Series I

A fish never knows whether the lure before it is a meal or a trap.

Perhaps life is much the same.

Many of our most important decisions happen within a single quiet moment.

Opportunity and danger.
Curiosity and caution.
Hope and uncertainty.

They often wear the same face.

The historic Fish Church of Gothenburg quietly anchors the scene, reminding us of the city's long relationship with the sea and those whose lives have depended on it.

The perch (Abborre) has not yet taken the lure.

It simply pauses.

The story has not begun.

And perhaps that is where the painting truly lives
