🚨 BRIDLELESS RIDING - WHY CORDEO PLACEMENT MATTERS 🐴
With the massive buzz surrounding the recent UK bridleless competition, social media feeds are flooded with inspiring videos of riders and their horses in perfect harmony. But as the trend grows, we need to address a dangerous misunderstanding popping up in many videos.
Take a close look at the reference image with the ❌ - In this screenshot, the rider is holding the cordeo (neck strap) incredibly high up on the neck, right near the throatlatch, and in the video we regularly see pulling backward.
While it might look like a tool for control, riding and halting like this is actually a major safety and welfare risk. Bridleless riding is meant to be a partnership built on comfort and freedom, not a dangerous restrictive practice.
ANATOMY MATTERS
A horse's trachea (windpipe) runs right along the underside of the neck. When a cordeo is pulled high up near the throatlatch it applies direct, concentrated pressure to this delicate airway.
Pulling here can cause immediate discomfort, restrict breathing, and cause long-term damage to the windpipe.
IT'S NOT AN 'OH SH*T STRAP"
A cordeo is not a steering wheel or an emergency brake! If a horse panics or bolts, pulling up high on a neck rope will only cause pain and restrict their oxygen, likely escalating their panic.True bridleless riding doesn't come from the hands; it comes from an established foundation of seat, leg, and weight aids.
PLACEMENT
The cordeo should sit on the base of the neck, right above the horse's shoulders. See the ✅
SIGNALS TO USE
If you use the cordeo to ask for a downward transition, the cue should be a light, rhythmic 'touch-and-release' contact slightly further up the neck, not a hard, sustained pull straight back into the throat.
Once the horse responds, the cordeo must immediately return to its neutral, low resting position.
SAFETY FIRST
Before removing the bridle, ensure your horse isconsistently halting from your voice, seat, and body language in a bridle or halter. A cordeo is not an "oh sh*t strap".
Let’s keep the bridleless movement beautiful, harmonious, and above all, safe! 🐴✨
