As founders of Worldish, we always think about what patients need when they are in a country where they do not speak the local language.

You need your privacy to be respected and a tool that empowers you in your communication with your doctor or nurse. You want to feel respected and equal. And above all, you want to understand, without any doubt, what treatment plan has been discussed with you.

You want to make sure that you have understood all the information the doctor or nurse has shared with you, so that you are able to follow the treatment plan correctly. Any dilution in these key aspects can significantly affect the quality of care and, ultimately, patient safety.

At Worldish, we have interviewed several hundred people, especially people living in Sweden who do not speak Swedish, about how they approach healthcare. We have also heard from patients in France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Finland, and now even the U.S. about their concerns when meeting healthcare professionals.

In Helen Assistant, we have taken all this feedback and these concerns into account.

Even when you have an interpreter in the consultation room, you may still wonder whether everything was communicated correctly. What if something the doctor said was summarized? What if you lack confidence in the way something has been interpreted? Interpretation can involve subjective errors, and not every interpretation is necessarily 100% accurate.

So, how about having an additional layer of support?

A medically trained, cutting-edge technology like Helen Assistant can be used together with an interpreter, allowing the patient and doctor to have an additional way to make sure that everything has been communicated correctly.

It is important to be clear: Helen Assistant is not here to replace interpreters.

It is here to empower interpreters and support them in doing their jobs even better.

A general AI tool may be able to help when you are ordering a taxi or making a restaurant reservation. But healthcare is different. In healthcare, you need the most accurate, data-secure, certified, medical-grade translation.

That is what Helen Assistant is built for.

If you are a healthcare institution looking to deploy an AI solution that is top-notch in medical accuracy, data security and compliance, while meeting the needs of doctors, nurses and, above all, patients, please reach out to us.

We hope you can help us spread the word and raise awareness about language barriers in healthcare and how unequal it can feel to be a patient who cannot speak the local language.

We, as founders, have experienced this journey ourselves, and it is not a good place to be.

Let’s change healthcare for the better — where care is equal for everyone, irrespective of which language they speak.

Helen Assistant, together with medically certified interpreters.

It’s hard to assume that patients have a good level of medical literacy. Many patients do not understand the medical jargon used by doctors and nurses. 🏥

Medical information can be complex, making it difficult for the average patient to fully understand what is happening throughout their treatment journey and how they need to follow the treatment procedures and instructions given by healthcare staff.

With Helen, we help facilitate better shared understanding between healthcare staff and patients by enabling communication not only through AI voice-to-voice translation and interpretation, but also through medically verified animations. 🤝

🎥 These animations help healthcare staff clearly communicate complicated medical instructions, procedures, and treatment plans to patients in a way that is easier to understand.

Here, you can see an example from a maternity care setting, where procedures such as CTG and lactate sampling are clearly communicated to patients with the aid of medically verified animations. 👩‍🍼

These animations have been developed in-house by the Worldish team and approved by our customer clinics and internal medical team, meaning they are certified for use in healthcare communication. ✅

So, Helen is not just an AI voice-to-voice interpreter.

It also integrates the ability to communicate through animations, further improving shared understanding between healthcare staff and patients. 💙

Facing language barriers, it's always difficult, especially in drop-in and emergency care situations. 🏥

Standard health declaration questions about allergies, previous medical history, and such can be time-consuming when a language barrier is in place.

And now, we don't have to worry about that with Helen's new Patient App.

Patients can scan a QR code while waiting in the waiting rooms of a primary care clinic, emergency care, or any drop-in clinic. They can fill in information about their medical background, history, and anamnesis in their own language before meeting the doctor.

Doctors receive a summary on their Helen tablets, summarized in their own language. This helps doctors and nurses review the information before meeting the patient.

So, time is saved, the quality of the care process is improved, and patient safety is enhanced. Clinicians can also save valuable consultation time, even when language barriers are involved, with Helen.

A simple step before the consultation that can make a real difference when care begins. 💙

Everyone talks about the challenges facing healthcare today and how digitalization and AI could be the answer to many of those challenges. But what we at Worldish have realized is that whatever technology or products we bring into healthcare to improve efficiency, improve the lives of healthcare staff and patients, and reduce stress, they need to be validated in real-life healthcare environments. 🏥

Products that are tested and validated in laboratory environments do not necessarily work in real healthcare settings, which are often under immense pressure and constrained by many different factors. That is why, with Helen Assistant, we have continuously collected and validated feedback directly from healthcare staff throughout the development process. The innovation itself was developed together with healthcare, including Region Östergötland, Linköping University Hospital, Sahlgrenska University Hospital, and Västra Götalandsregionen in Gothenburg. 🤝

Through this close collaboration, we have always sought to understand the challenges connected to existing solutions for language barriers. Healthcare staff told us that there is a widespread lack of quality among interpreters used in healthcare, and that there is often no feedback mechanism to understand whether information has actually been communicated correctly by human interpreters. Human interpreters with medical competence are inevitable and will continue to play an important role, but high-quality interpretation is mandatory, and in many cases, the need is not being adequately met by existing suppliers. 🩺

At the same time, they told us that general AI tools were unreliable and could create huge risks to patient safety. What they wanted was a solution where qualified human interpreters with medical competence could work hand-in-hand with a medically trained and medically validated AI interpretation solution. That is the answer we brought to them with the Helen Assistant®, and they have welcomed it with open arms. 🤖🤝🧑‍⚕️

This has been our journey, and we believe it is an important lesson for every healthcare innovation. We hope that healthcare innovators everywhere will talk to their end users—healthcare staff, nurses, doctors, and support staff—very early in the development process. By doing so, you can develop products according to their real needs and create solutions that truly work in environments where they are needed most. 🌍💙
