Nothing says “I love you” quite as deeply as a personalized painting

So when I heard John Boyega is coming to Motor City Comic Con , I dropped everything and put together a painting as fast as I could.

No planning, no prepping — just pure instinctual raw emotion translated into what I thought he would appreciate the most: seeing Finn as a Jedi

Every commission I’ve made has been central to my identity, too. This one especially will live on with me forever.

It was my first comic con, and I was so nervous that I shared a booth with my friend.

I overheard another vendor talking to the guy next to me. He was talking about how deep Lord Of The Rings is.

I don’t know what possessed me, but I awkwardly shouted, “I love Lord Of The Rings, too! I wish someone would ask me to paint it for them!”

Not only did he commission me on the spot, but he also paid it all up front, right there, without so much as a sketch.

His confidence in me STILL fuels my own confidence in me.

I shot my shot with no spine and launched my comic con art career. If I can fake it til I make it, anyone can.

This one will always be one of my favorites. 🍎

I remember being a little girl and thinking that it was so evil to manipulate someone the way the Evil Queen did to Snow White.

I thought about how cruel it would be to be hungry and reach for an apple, only to realize that what you took as a generous gift was actually poison.

I hated how simple it was: the Evil Queen was jealous, so she wanted Snow White to die. It’s no deeper than that. It’s just black and white.

That’s why I chose carve and print this one instead of paint it. It was originally an ink drawing I did back in high school, but it has stuck with me since then.

That being said, the linoleum has really worn down. I won’t be making any more prints of this, so snag it while you can.

This painting was inspired after my fiancé (now husband) took me to the haunted Henderson castle for a murder mystery dinner.

The elements I’ve incorporated into this painting are based on the story that we had to solve. This now hangs with our photos from that day, a secret mystery that only we know the story behind.

In hindsight, I see that my love for jigsaw puzzles came through in this painting, because I love hidden image puzzles. That being said, I’m planning on turning this into a puzzle.

It was never “just a children’s story”

George Lucas studied centuries worth of anthropology just so that Star Wars made sense.

(The same way I studied Norse Mythology for that Viking Family Portrait I painted)

In taking the time to engross yourself in the movies, TV series, and books, you are learning not only about others, but you are learning about yourself too.

You are learning your place in the galaxy. You are also learning your place in the galaxy can change.

It teaches how to navigate life and how to cope with the things we can’t control, much like religion does.

It is one of the truest reflections of human nature. That’s why you feel like you belong— because you do.

Why else do you think it’s so relatable across distance and time?

I will probably paint Star Wars for the rest of my life, regardless of if I’m commissioned to do so.
